The USB case is likely what you see that sticker on.

I think that most if not ALL disk drives are actually built in Sinapore now, regardless of brand name.

The drive wouldn't even power up so I couldn't look in Device Manager. You're right though that I saw 'made in Taiwan' on the box which I still happen to have. What is noticeable that the box itself doesn't have any brand name on it, just "1 Touch Backup". There are a large number of USB drive sellers besides WD, Seagate etc. there are second tier like Lacie and a bunch others. This was more like a "no frills" brand. But there wasn't any "no frills" brand name on it. My drive must have been some type of exception or I'd think there be more posters on the topic.
