You can use use any other drive (external or internal) and set RB to use that drive for the backup location each time you save if desired. That's what I do. Doesn't have to be 'outboard' if you have space for another internal drive .. that drive will still work on any other computer in theory.
Using an external/'outboard' drive may slow down the Save process (so you need to consider the trade off). Having multiple internal drives is how I roll.
I used a previously posted image as an example, but point is, you can use other drives. Backups have saved me misery more than once.
