The add vst function allows you to browse to where you keep your vst s and ad it to the list of vst that biab can load into one of its slots . You can then select from the slot pull down menu. The top slot is the only slot you can load a vsti instrument say a GM synth. This is the slot used by what you want to be your Default synth The other 3 are for effects vst Once loaded in a slot for the track you want you will see the vst gui The pic below shows a Mini Moog vsti loaded in the top slot.
