This is the place where I am totally lost in computer music. Every time I try to download a VST, I can't figure out where it goes, how to use it or anything else. I am taking the Berklee Course on technology, but so far it hasn't' mentioned this. So I need help.
I downloaded a file which offers a free version of the Yamaha RX5. I downloaded the 64 bit version. Should I have taken the 32 bit version?
Then it asked what I wanted to open it with. I have no clue what to say, so I said File Explorer. At least I would know where it is. It went to Temp/VDE which stands for Vintage Drum Elements. I open that folder and there are 10 files with suffix .mse.
Can anyone tell me if 1) I can use these with BB or RB? 2) How do I get them in a directory where I BB and RB can see them and use them?
VTS like that are used inside a DAW, and are triggered by the keyboard you have selected as your midi input in the options of your DAW.
I believe Real Band is still 32 bit so yes you should download 32 bit.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
In Real band, create a midi channel, then go to edit VST.
Go to select/add new VST.
Go to the file where you put this VST plugin or where it was stored.
If you did not run it as an install, put it in the Steinberg folder in windows, and just select it there. You may see it as a .dll file. If it is not a .dll file it will not work in Real Band I don't think.
Most DAWS (other than Real Band) allow you to scan for VSTs but you have to select the folders to scan.
If you have real trouble, call tech support and I imagine they will be able to show you how to do this once in Real Band in about five minutes.
Just to let you know, don't get frustrated. This stuff takes about a year to figure out. There is a lot to know.
But once you start to "get it" the learning curve speeds up a lot. In the beginning it can be maddening.

VST and VSTi files are implemented as DLL's. How you install them depends on the VST(i). Some are just the VST; others include additional files (such as sounds samples in the case of VSTi's). If you received an EXE, then just run the EXE to install the VST; normally, you will be able to specify where it goes, but some install into a default VST folder (which could be any number of places depending on your computer. If you received a ZIP file, you will have to unzip it to the location of your choice. If you received just the .DLL file, then copy it to where you want it.
I keep all my VST's organized under special folder, separated by 32-bit and 64-bit VST's. This allows me to easily select which VST to load. Here is a post I previously made about my VST's. But you can put them anywhere you want.
Then, in BIAB or RB, you go out and select the .DLL file (for example, Kontakt.dll) from where you installed/copied it from within the VST/VSTi interface (using the "Add VSTi Plugin" selection (see below).
That's probably a lot more information than you wanted, but hopefully it helps.
