Big Star

This song was inspired by a post in a Facebook group about peoples fears of being a career musician. Some of the answers were respectable but some were pretty irrational and I used those as the main inspiration of this comical song.

1: Big Star
2: _DTHVLY=.STY Death Vly Train-Beat MultyStyle
3: Country

Lyrics:

I’ll never play the Grand Ol' Opry
Or have a million records sold.
Cause I won’t sell my soul to Satan
Besides I’m getting too damn old.
I’ll probably never win a Grammy
So hell, why even try.
I’ll let my dreams fall to the wayside
And I’ll go work a 9 to 5.

Yeah I could be a big star
Sometimes I play one in my mind.
But I’ll probably never “make it”
So why should I even try?
I’ll play it safe so I don’t wind up
Broke and sleeping in my car.
I’ll be content with being normal
Knowing I could have been a star.

I’ll probably never have a hit song
Playing on the radio.
I’ll never sell out big arenas
Touring out there on the road.
Won’t have to hide from paparazzi
Or get addicted to some drug
I’ll never have a groupie orgy
In the back of my tour bus.

Yeah I could be a big star
Sometimes I play one in my mind.
But I’ll probably never “make it”
So why should I even try?
I’ll play it safe so I don’t wind up
Broke and sleeping in my car.
I’ll be content with being normal
Knowing I could have been a star.

And I know when get older
I’ll probably look back with regret
For not following the dreams I had
That kept on messing with my head.

I’ll say I could have been a big star
Sometimes I played one in my mind
But I never would have “made it”
So I never even tried.
I played it safe and didn’t wind up
Broke and sleeping in my car.
I’m quite content with being normal
Knowing I could have been a star.

Yes I’m content with being normal
Knowing I could have been a star.

Samuel,

I think this is your best song to date. I love it.

It is actually very profound, the hook is crazy good, the lyrics are tight as a drum, and it just sounds great too.

I really, really like this song. It says a lot.

Again, it is by far my favorite Samuel song so far. Great job.

Tater is jealous and mad, if that means anything to you.

Thanks David. Please tell Tater not to be mad. I wouldn't want to get on his bad side lol

I'll admit that this type of "trad country" music is quite far from what I'd normally go for or listen to (for better or worse). But I'd still like to think I can appreciate a well constructed & expertly produced piece of art when I hear one, and this certainly marks very high on those fronts. Everything sounds crisp & clear, which for lyrics like yours is obviously very important here.

And man oh man, those lyrics are painfully on the nose! smirk

I'm not sure it's your best song to date but it is mighty good. The lyrics are well crafted and you sang them well. Your production is awesome.

What I don't get is how you manage to change how your voice sounds from song to song. Listen to Dixie and Big Star and if you didn't know better you wouldn't think the songs are sung by the same vocalist. Dang but that's good.

A few years ago I listened to many, many Pat Boone songs as much as to study the production as to casually listen. I listened to everything from Moody River to Speedy Gonzalus to El Paso (note for note backing track copy of Marty Robbin's original) to his sacred albums. The producer, arranger and engineer ALWAYS paid attention to molding the voice to the song. You seem to know how to play that game too. Jim Reeves and Marty Robbins songs have the same attention to vocal detail.

Thanks Icelander and Jim. As for my vocals I try to make them fit to the song. I've studied voice from a young age and can do anything from classical to jazz to rock and obviously country. Each has their own distinct sound in my mind and matching the vocals to the song has just as much to do with the delivery as to how it is mixed. I'm still working on the mixing part but I think I'm getting better and better with each song I do..

I've always believed that to be true but you are one of the few vocalists I know to actually say it.

Great vocals, lyrics and production. "Yes I’m content with being normal Knowing I could have been a star" very good line to summarize the message smile
