For songs with lyrics, it’s almost always lyrics first for me. Or at least lyrical ideas. Having had just a tiny bit of formal songwriting training and then a yearly workshop/challenge, this has become disciplined activity for me. And it’s almost always lyrics first. Music next. As best I understand it, that's the Elton John school of song-writing. I wish I could do it, but I just can't. I guess I'm not as "musical" as I need to be to do that.

I'm always interested to get a glimpse under the hood of "process".
