Betsy back in 1965 was a hurricane for two days moving inland after landfall. It was my first encounter with one as a kid. We were one of the last cars let across the causeway evacuating New Orleasns and water was coming over that long bridge - so scary. Michael was stronger on landfall but reminded me of of Betsy who put parts of New Orleans under 12 feet of water and then kept going and going through different states reeking havoc. Nothing good about any hurricane and it seems they are getting stronger and stronger.

Michael passed through Winston Salem yesterday around midday. Three trees fell in my next door neighbor's yard, one went through the roof. Naturally, it happened during a cloudburst, so the new hole in the roof let in a lot of water.

I got lucky this time... but there are a lot of trees I need to get removed before the next big storm.

I hate to cut trees down, but I hate trees in the house even more... so I'll probably replace them with smaller varieties.

I'm glad nobody here is reporting a major problem.

I did give a pint of blood, and asked about the supplies in the FL Panhandle, and the phlebotomist said so far they are strong, but time will tell.

Of the worst natural disasters I can think of offhand, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, avalanches, river floods, and hurricanes, I think I would choose the hurricane as the most survivable.

You know the 'cane is coming days in advance so you can prepare for it -- if you bought your home wisely as a well built home in a high for Florida elevation and away from the storm surge (definitely not on a barrier island) you have an excellent chance of survival. Probably a better chance than a day in traffic.

I've weathered almost every hurricane that has hit the east coast of Florida since Donna in 1960 and never had a major problem.

Of course that doesn't guarantee safety from the next one. And thanks to climate change the water is warmer which breeds stronger storms.

September and October storms seem to be the worst for Florida and the Gulf states.

A lot of the devastation I see in pictures from Michael are to buildings that were not built to withstand hurricane winds and in locations too close to the storm surge. My heart goes out to those unfortunate souls that lost so much.
