Hello to All,
Well I am having a bit of a time and hope someone out there can assist. I have a new computer, HP Pavilion desktop with lots of memory and Windows 7. Have downloaded version of BIAB 2010 Everything PAK. I purchased a Tascam 144MKII audio interface that subsequently crashed my system and I later discovered was not compatible with Windows 7, so I returned it. The store now recommends that I purchase the PreSonus Audiobox USB that they have on order. I reviewed this product online and it doesn't appear to be configured for Windows 7 either. I'm sort of stuck in a loop. My main purpose for purchasing BIAB was to upgrade from my 2004 version and be able to record original material. I also intend to use a MIDI keyboard. I just add this for reference as I don't suspect a problem thre. Does anyone have a work around or suggestion for the audio interface issue?
One other question. In my eagerness to get started with BIAB 2010, I requested PG Music send me the links and I downloaded Everything. Today I received the physical software and am wondering if the downloads are fine or if I should uninstall them and replace with the hard drive? I am not aware of any problems with the downloads I'm just wondering as a precaution.
Thanks for any help, I am totally exhausted trying to figure it all out!

Over the past months there has been a lot of chatter here in the forum regarding Audio Interfaces. Not sure I have heard much postive about the Presonius AudioBox. Others may disagree.

Win7 certainly has caused a lot of problems. Look for a vendor who is ontop of the Win7 drivers issue, MAudio for example. I recently set up a Audiophile 192 ($165 USD) and it is working very nice for audio with BIAB and RB.

BIAB – 2025, Reaper (current), i7-12700F Processor, 32GB DDR4-3200MHz RAM, Motu Audio Express 6x6 - My SoundCloud (Tip: No need to create a SC account to hear music - just hit ESC ).

When you say that the TASCAM audio interface crashed your system, what exactly happened? Did you get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with a message about a problem with the USB contoller or hub?.

Don't worry about having a problem with the downloads. Try try it and see if it works. I had a problem with one in the past and PG Music quickly let me pay the extra few bucks to upgrade to the disk and fixed the problem for me in no time.

Hi,

I feel your pain. I had problems getting my Tascam Fireone to work with Win 7. I was going to get an M-audio 610, which I had heard great reviews about, until I went to the user's forum at M-audio and began reading about all the problems windows users were having with it and other devices by that company.
In the last week, I found a workaround for getting Tascam units to work with win 7, here is the link>

http://runagate.noisepages.com/2009/10/how-to-get-the-tascam-fireone-working-on-windows-7/

Now my Fireone is working great, BIAB sounds better than ever, life is good.

If you are deciding which interface to buy, I would highly recommend the new Firewire interface from Focusrite>

Focusrite Saffire Pro 24
16-in/8-out FireWire Audio Interface, 24-bit/96kHz Resolution, with 2 Microphone Preamplifiers, DSP Mixer, and Software Bundle - Mac/PC

$299 and the mic preamps are better than M-audio. For this price you are not going to get Apogee quality, but still very nice and no problems with win 7 32 & 64.

All these reported problems with interfaces, compatibility with software, etc. is exactly the reason I've stuck with stand alone recorders. I'd love to get into computer-based recording, but not sure if I could learn it all on my own. In addition to the preloaded hard drives, maybe someday pgmusic will offer laptops and interfaces designed for and guaranteed to work with BIAB and RB. I'd purchase such.

I thank all of you for your support and responses. It's amazing what one can learn when necessary. I'm running a Win 7 64 bit and believe me, a week ago to say that would have been like speaking a foreign language...I mean foreign like form another planet! I thought all was well with the audio interface, at least I could record yesterday. Today, when I try to render a WAV file, the screen fades to white and I get kicked out of BIAB. Scary, as I 'm afraid I'm killing another computer!! This is the second one in a week. Is there something special I should be doing after recording. Can't even burn a CD. Also getting " red "Alerts" from Microsoft although I can find no actual messages they keep doing diagnostic tests. .
I'll just keep plugging away and thanks again to all of you. This forum is the very best thing in learning. You are all awesome!

I'd like to hear more about this. Do you generate the song in BIAB and then record on a separate recorder? What is the process? Do you make a WAVE file?

Carolyne, welcome to the forum.

About the fading to white and BIAB crashing, this is a known bug in BIAB that only a few of us suffered. Be sure to download the latest patch, which is Build 291 now. [I believe 289b addressed the problem you are having.] Go here for the update: http://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm#291

About the Tascam equipment, although I know you got rid of it, this is also a known problem. On the Tascam forum, many complain of crashes, especially BSOD when shutting down. The legacy driver mentioned by Ed above worked for firewire-based equipment, and I was one of the first to get my Tascam unit working under Windows 7 32-bit, although we still can't use it in 64-bit. Tascam has announced they are developing a new driver for the 144MKII, but it is not out yet. As for me, I have a FW-1884 and they announced they WILL NOT support it for Windows 7. This is a kick in the teeth, to say the least, from that company. Tascam owners can read the news here: http://www.tascam.de/en/docs/Tascam_Win7_compat.pdf

Your last question, about process. You will find many, many different answers among the users here, and whatever works is the correct answer. I am a jazz composer, and I write the basic song in BIAB and then take it to SONAR for more editing and additional tracks, then I mix it to stereo and do the final editing in Adobe Audition. I only use SONAR because I learned that long before I had PowerTracks/RealBand from PG Music, but those tools can do a similar job and actually have some cross-program advantages. Yes to your question, the ultimate goal is .WAV files. First many, for each track, and finally one, mixed down to stereo for CD or MP3 quality. There's so much more to all of this, of course, and as you have specific questions, we will help.

perhaps an analogy might help.
i'm not a architect..lol..so apologies..but here goes...

when a building is built..
firstly a foundation n framework is erected , then all the
building is built up from that.
then finally the prettying up of the building takes
place to make it hopefully pleaseing to the eye.

in many respects a song is no different to the above analogy.

think of biab as building the framework and bed traks of the song.
and realband as fleshing out lots of extra traks and details and
finally adding the song pretties n iceings.

so one way of working would be to flesh out the song basics in biab,
then import the song into realband where you have 48 traks.

if you compartmentalise like this it might help you,
viz song basics in biab, and fleshing out the added traks and
things like upfront lead vocs in realband etc.
then final mixing and creation of the final stereo master in rb.

the beauty of this is biab songs will open in realband.

this is just one way of working.
i'm sure other folks have other ways.

you know the old song..
"love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage" ??..lol.
you can think of biab and RB the ame way.
they are like "mates".
together they can give you a very powerfull
solution for creating songs.
