“Day of the Dead”

Nov 2, in many cultures, is a day of honoring the dead...”Dia de los muertos” in Mexico. This track tries to capture the spirit of the tradition, with a song style that attempts to be a bit spooky and mysterious, yet reverent. Appreciate comments, as usual..thanks, forum friends.

—————-

This the tradition we keep--
Comforting friends who sleep.
Waiting for scales to be shed;
Aid on the path to the sun ahead;
On this day for our honored dead.

This is the DAY OF THE DEAD;
Asleep in their faithful bed;
Cannot proceed on their own;
Must have our help for the road ahead.

This is the work we must do;
They need to hear from you;
Offer an earnest request;
Meant for our brothers who rest;
Give them the gift of the words
That are said
On the DAY OF THE DEAD!

This is the DAY OF THE DEAD
'Cross the divide we're wed;
Here from our house on the ground,
Lift up your pleas be upward bound.

This work will never be through;
They'll need a prayer from you;
Offer your earnest requests;
In this you'll surely be blessed;
Give them the gift of the words
That are said
On the DAY OF THE DEAD!
The DAY OF THE DEAD!
Of the Dead!

Did not use a BIAB style, built this from ground up.
Various bits of RT’s and some sound effects.
Also a cool flute UserTrack from David Cuny near the end.

BRAVO!!! I loved it. The flute especially was great as a background "effect", but the whole thing - the singing, the style of the song and so on - are, I think, really original! You've really done a tremendous job here, in my view - no criticisms at all, haha. Bravo once more.

What a great song, Tano. I was actually reading up on this in a book about Death in different cultures lately. It was a really neat read.

But back to your song -- I never know what to expect from your songs because they are always so different, but that's one of the things I really enjoy about listening to your content.

Thanks for taking the time to share with us again!

Cool art piece! Enjoyed ghost coming out at 3:00. Vocals have good rhythmical energy for this tune.

I wrote a few "spooky" kids songs in the past and like this type of themes a lot. Very atmospheric. Good stuff!

"a bit spooky and mysterious, yet reverent."

Goal met!

Great selection of tracks...we really like it when one pulls from multiple styles. For us that's often the real beauty of BiaB when in the hands of a talented artist. (It would be nice to see what all was used.)

Original, different and ultimately very creative.

The out front vocal sits perfectly in the mix and is a fine performance.

There is a lot to like here with the write and production...nuanced in a good way.

Enjoyed the spins!!

Musician17, Ember, rustyspoon, J&B.. Thanks for the very kind comments. I made this by staring with that repeated bad line, added a keyboard - based releasing chord pattern then added shakers etc for rhythm elements. I wanted a "bowed saw" type of wailing sound, found something similar in RT, I think steel guitar solo (not near my system right now). Then just kept decorating the tree with ornaments!

That is a really, really cool song.. and a great production. It was a joy listening to it.

One small thing that - for me - was a bit disturbing, was the sound effects in the last 10 seconds. Maybe a bit too loud compared with the rest of the track. But this is a tiny little thing to worry about... all in all it was a great experience to listen to it and I will for sure return and listen to it again. smile

One last thing, Tano Music. I know it is trivial for all you experienced users of BiaB, but for a beginner like me it would be nice if you next time give the names of some of the RTs you use (even if you only use bits of them), because maybe I and others can learn something from it.

Take care,
Will

Thanks Will, I normally do give that information about the RTs and styles, but today I happen to be away from my workstation and I don't have access to the SEQ files.. Thanks for the great feedback.

What a fine listening experience. I never knew what new sonic treat was just around the corner, and was delighted by them all. Really enjoyed this.

Hello, "Tano Music"...

This "Day of the Dead" piece, it's probably the most eccentrically entertaining music I've ever heard on this forum! Had a ritualistic feel, too, with that tick-tock rhythm of the cowbell, and the rattles at the intro.

Here, and there, were some downright bluesy, modernistic piano chords that added color to the surreal instrumental mix. And then, at 4:00, after the tremolo organ hit, I thought that brief flute solo was gonna burst out into some kind of ghoulish, jazz-inflected tango. I wish you had followed that trail! The chordal movement after that was lusciously cool and mystical, just for a moment.

This is dream-time, primeval music that you hear behind closed eyes on the verge of sleep, or wakening, but with a jazzy twist, and an assist from your alternately playful, then seemingly reverent lyrics, which you delivered like a shaman with just a bit of a sense of humor.

"Rest in peace", Tano Music...and then come back to the forum with another unexpected novelty like "Day of the Dead", cool !!!

TM,

An excellent piece. Your use of percussion and repeating riffs sets the tone perfectly. A good lyric, well presented.

This kept my attention throughout.

The effect on the vocal - a sort of "doubling or Autotune-ish" sound - was a good choice. I thought it should have a fairly heavy reverb applied, as well, to give it a more "ghostly" sound (a personal choice, I know).

Much enjoyed.

You are really talented songwriter with very unique style, in a kind of musical-theatre category. Combined that talent with BIAB produces wonderful and different music smile Clever haunting rhythm, nicely selected sound effects and scary instruments. Perfect Halloween/zombie music.
