Have you tried using the headphones on different hardware?

The issue could be the hardware headphone receptacle is bad. I've seen multiple cases where a jack will be a little larger than standard causing a receptacle contact to distort and no longer make good contact when a jack that is standard size is inserted.

Another possible issue could be the receptacle contacts haze oxidized or corroded. A small can of electrical contact cleaner/lubrication might solve that issue. Contact cleaner/lubrication is available online, in the chemical or electrical section of Lowe's Hardware or at most music stores.

Last, you can possible cut off the offending connector, shorten the cable some and solder a new connector in place. You have little to lose by trying.
