I have the default location of
C:\bb\Soloists

I'm running low on disk space on C: noticed that soloist was 12GB. Therefore wondering if there is an option to move this directory to another drive, just like we can do for realdrums and realstyles?

If not, it should be possible to achieve using symbolic link on the file system, but would prefer to use built-in settings if available.

thanks

I understand that you can only nominate the RealDrums and RealTracks folders.

A Symbolic Link would probably work, but I would be reluctant to take that path unless you can really keep a check on the link.

Right, the Soloist folder should stay in the BB folder.

You can move the entire BB folder to another drive though.

Thanks

Thanks, Yeah, I think I'll keep BB folder where it is, as it's not too large, but creating a soloists symlink pointing to another directory on an external drive is no biggie. BIAB will not even notice the directory has been moved.

Here's the command (run from command window as admin user), you only need to run it once after moving the Soloists directory.

cd C:\bb
mklink /J Soloists E:\BIAB\Soloists
dir
2018-10-26 18:12 <JUNCTION> Soloists [E:\BIAB\Soloists]

Hey Konaboy,

If it works for you, that's great, it's your right to organize your computer however you wish.

One thing to note, that maybe an unintended side-effect. In the event you are in need of technical support, this will greatly complicate the troubleshooting method.

Typically (as mentioned above), if you have room, it is a much better idea to move the entirety of the bb folder to a drive where you have space for it.

There is a time and place for Symbolic links, but for those I know who use them, they are more of a last resort then a fix. It is more for moving programs out of C:\ Program files rather then removing select Files from a program's directory.

Just note, that if you do need to have this version troubleshooted in the future, it is very likely you will have to revert these changes.

Let me get this straight: you complain the soloist folder being big @ 12 GB but the bb folder, which btw mine is 112GB, is not?

This makes absolutely no sense at all.

I understand that the Soloists folder is a sub-folder of the actual BB folder, so therefore is included in the measurement of the BB folder size.

my bb folder on my C drive is now only 4GB total.

I was running out of space on C: it is a small but fast SSD.

therefore I needed to move the 12GB soloists folder.

I have already re-located the drums and realtracks folders which are >100GB. there is an option for this when you install.

There should be an option to configure location of all large folders (soloists, drums, realtracks). #featurerequest

So if I understand this. You can move the whole file that contains Band in a Box to another HD? There are no problems with the windows registry in doing this? I mean most installed programs have registry links and if you move it to another folder the program does not work. How is Band in a Box different in this aspect? Thanks

BIAB is different because it doesn't use the registry (as most Windows apps do), except for a few items (f. ex., if you have BIAB set to launch when you click on an SGU/MGU file, you may have to re-enable it after moving the BIAB folder). In general, it works fine when you move it to a new folder or disk drive.

Some interesting comments here regarding moving the entire BIAB directory. One question comes to mind, the OP references that he has his BIAB install on an SSD.

If he moves that to a mechanical HD wouldn't that impact loading and perhaps regeneration of the BIAB songs? Moving RT's and RD's to a secondary HD and leaving the main program on the SSD might be a better performance move (as Rharv frequently points out..thanks for that one Rharv).

Getting a larger SSD considering their lower cost these days might be an even better performance enhancement.

Hi Mountainside,

I think having BIAB on an SSD should get the program to open faster (though it's already pretty quick on my machine), but song generation should be pretty similar, since the RealTracks would still be on a mechanical HD.

Putting the RealTracks on an SSD might speed up generation, but when we tested it a few years ago, it wasn't as big a difference as I expected (maybe a second or two per song if memory serves me correctly). Hard drive speed didn't appear to be a major bottleneck.

Thanks

Thanks Kent, that's good to know.

Have been thinking about moving my RT and RD to a second SSD and running the main programs off the first SSD.

Perhaps best just to upgrade the primary SSD to a larger unit and put all of the RD, RT and programs on that one.

On the other hand, sounds like it wouldn't result in any significant improvement in performance or function over my current setup.

Thanks for the info Kent, appreciate having an insider like you on the forum team.
