So I thought I'd toss this one out to the Forumind. The problem is very simple. When I load a song with MIDI instrumentation, all of the instruments default to a jangly guitar sound -- even the drums. When I go to set an instrument's patch, it doesn't make any difference. This applies only to MIDI instrumentation. RealTracks and RealDrums are not affected. It also applies only to the built-in PG MIDI sounds. If I load Sforzando, for example, its sounds will play back fine. PG Support recommended that I follow procedures found at PG's online help section found here: http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq47.htm#93They recommended I delete or rename intrface.bbw and mysetup.dk, then reboot the program. I've tried this -- more than once -- and it doesn't do any good. The help file also shows other files that can be deleted, but I don't think any of them pertain to my problem. Except for one mystery file that they don't say what it does: default7bbc. I haven't tried deleting it yet. The instructions also mention that I can try resetting the program to factory defaults. I've tried this also, having it reset the MIDI driver, and it didn't do any good. I've mentioned to them that I'm thinking it's time to reinstall BB over the existing files, but the support folks were holding out for the moment, hoping that the above would work. I've run out of things to try, and I'm waiting to hear back from them, but I'm thinking that the likely answer is to proceed with a reinstall. Or wait a few days and upgrade to 2019. Heh. Any ideas?

I would say that your default synth was not a gm synth and just a single voice synth
Just try for now, setting your default synth to Coyote WT under the menu Plugins /Defalt Synth and set it to the top slot.
And under the midi settings set a tick in use VST/DGXi.

I agree with Mike.
Click on the "Plugins" tab in the mixer and check if there are VSTi/DXi synths loaded on any of the tracks. If there is, for the purpose of testing, remove these instances. This will cause the default synth to take over that track's sound.
Then in the MIDI driver set up, as Mike says, set the VSTi/DXi to CoyoteWT.

It also applies only to the built-in PG MIDI sounds. If I load Sforzando, for example, its sounds will play back fine. This is your problem, there are NO built-in PG midi sounds. Biab only uses whatever synth you select for it. I assume you're referring to the Coyote Wavetable that PG provides. That has to be installed it's not some kind of automatic default. Do that then you can select it the same way you selected the Sforzando synth. Bob

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. Honestly, this isn't something I even thought to check. All I knew was it was working fine one day then the next, it was totally non-responsive. Dunno why things got switched around. Anyway, I reset the default synth to Coyote (already had VST/DXi checked), and everything's back to where it should be.
Thanks so much! Once again, the Forumind comes through!
Now, I gotta ask myself -- why didn't PG Support catch this?

That's a good question, it's pretty basic.
I remember when I had the exact same issues with basic stuff because 15 years ago I knew absolutely squat about working with digital audio, it was all new to me. I never contacted Support because I'm one who wants to figure it out himself but I still posted some basic questions here and the guys came through.
