BIAB midi / RB import problem

Hello,

I don't understand why BIAB wont separate midi tracks, and
it only plays on one " trombone " track. What use is that?

I note RB separates them, but how do I get that to BIAB,
in one easy step?

thanks

Hello KGU 2,

The Reason you are seeing this is RealBand is geared towards Multi-Channel work in both Recording and MIDI.

Band-in-a-Box is geared towards generating backing tracks, and was never intended to be a DAW replacement.

When you import a MIDI file into Band-in-a-Box, it will import the entirety of it to the Melody Channel, leaving the rest of the channels open for generation of MIDI and RealTracks.

If you really need to split your MIDI channels in Band-in-a-Box, you can work around this by importing the MIDI file into the Melody Track, then going Edit > Copy Special > Copy/ Move Tracks. Here you can select the individual channels and move them to another track in the Mixer.

BIAB imports a MIDI file onto the single Melody track as a multi-channel track. You can access the various channels using the "Sequencer" feature of BIAB, which allows you to delete, move, mute, solo, reassign instruments, etc on the the various channels contained within the track. Think of it sort of like a Type 0 MIDI file, where all the channels are on the same track (versus a Type 1 MIDI file that spreads channels across multiple tracks - as you would generally do in a DAW, although DAWs can and do handle Type 0 files also).

You have to be careful with imported MIDI files, in that you can potentially end up with channel conflicts if you are using an underlying MIDI style for the other tracks. If you are using all RealTracks, you shouldn't have a problem there.

BIAB will not import the MIDI to the other tracks (such as a bass or piano track), because those are by designed populated by content from the selected style (and regenerate when you play back).

That's how it works. BIAB is not a DAW and doesn't work like one, even though it has some DAW features. It is at its heart an accompaniment generator that has some features for handling imported MIDI, as long as that MIDI doesn't get in the way of its main purpose.

Take a look at the green Sequencer button and you'll find that you can do quite a lot with in an imported MIDI file, but if you really want full control of that file (along with the generated tracks), then I would take it into a DAW instead.

thank you yes need to do it.

But is there a tutorial? Thats very confusing. One, there
is no trombone choice in the pull down menu.

I don't see how that complicated box separates tracks.

What are you using as your MIDI sound source? When you play the song back, are you saying you only hear the trombone on the Melody track? What other instruments are supposed to be there? Please give us some more information on what you are trying to actually accomplish with details and we can help you figure it out.

For example:

Quote:
I have a MIDI file with a trombone solo on channel 1, a piano part on channel 2, a bass on channel 3, a strummed guitar on channel 4.

I load it into BIAB and everything goes to the melody track (which it should). I used the MIDI chord wizard to figure out the chord progression and now I want to substitute a RealTrack for the MIDI guitar track.

I'm using the Coyote WT as my default General MIDI sound source. So I expect to hear all the MIDI parts. I've load the style MYSTYLE.STY, but only hear (whatever).

Let us know and we can probably figure out how best to help you.

Hi

1 I get a free midi file from the net.

2 import to biab.

3 All the chords are listed in chord sheet window, so far so good.

When I play it however, only a TROMBONE
track suddenly appears at bottom of top right window, and plays in the viewer top right.

{ other tracks are listed there, but do nothing.

I want:

A. to separate the midi tracks so I can
substitute instruments. { yellow to
green }

B. Edit the chords, as needed.

C. export separate files { WAVE } to
daw.

thanks

Do you mean the mixer window?

By yellow to green, I presume you mean to substitute RealTracks to replace the MIDI tracks?

If you haven't yet, I think you need to look in the user manual at the Sequencer feature to see how you can manage the tracks in the now multichannel melody track.

If you could provide a copy of the MIDI file you are working with (link it from dropbox or Google Drive), I'd be happy to take a look at it this evening after work.

Then unfortunately, you won't be able to do what you want to do, because that's not how it works with multi-channel imported MIDI files. I've shared with you how it works.

And I only asked for your MIDI file so I can see the same thing as you. That helps troubleshooting.

I'm pretty sure you can get to where you want to be, but it involves a good understanding of exactly how BIAB works (especially regarding advanced features).

If you want BIAB to work differently than it does, please enter your suggestion on the wish list forum. That won't help you in the short term, however.

I'm just a user like everyone else here (although occasionally PGMusic personnel pop in, and it's clear they are employees) and just enjoy helping folks other out. But I can't make the program do what it isn't designed to do.

Stay in RB .. you'll be happier.
Sounds to me like you are trying to make BiaB do things it wasn't designed to do, and RB was.

I'm willing to spend a little more time in RB with a lot more control.
BiaB is not RB and vice-versa

They exist as different apps because they are indeed different apps.
You can not do everything in BiaB that you can in RB. And the reverse is also true, but for me 'whole song generating speed' is about all BiaB has over RB.

After the initial song idea is done in BiaB, everything else has more/better options in RB.
At least for my work flow.

Exactly. Band-in-a-Box is fantastic for generating new backing tracks based on chords, but isn't the best choice for editing MIDI files. It's possible, but will make things a lot more complicated and labour-intensive than they need to be.

RealBand is great at editing MIDI files quickly and easily.

Cheers

as Ive stated, I can't use REAL BAND 2018.

1. It will not open my biab lyrics.

{ who ever heard of a song without
lyrics ? ]

2. It can not transfer markers between.

are these over-sites? I mean come on,
real band only has to communicate with
one app in the universe!

Lyrics work fine in RealBand. You can enter them manually; you can display them in the big lyrics window; you can export them to MIDI or Karaoke format. You can copy them into a document window.

Unfortunately, you opted for bar based lyrics in BIAB. Those won't transfer over (and you won't even get them had you exported to a MIDI file to use in a different DAW). You have to use note based lyrics in BIAB to read the lyrics into RealBand. If you had done that, they would have come over to RealBand just fine.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
