I have looked a lot. So I have this song in RB, I have track 13 a midi track and in there I have sforzando x86. I can start recording, play my casio keyboard, and hear the piano sounds and see the midi notes on the track, and then it asks me if I want the midi on track 15, and so I say yes and there it is.
But why won't it let me change the instrument to some other sforzando-available instrument?

You need to put a separate instance of Sforzando on each track. Use the command to load a VSTi in either an unused slot or in a slot you specify. Select the appropriate instrument on each track. Sforzando is not multi timbral and can only play one sound per instance. If you load the same port VSTi on multiple tracks, you can't assign a different instrument to each track with Sforzando. That's why you need the separate instances.

Thank you John, and I did read the other thread about this in which you talked about it. But this isn't multiple instances. It will play the piano, and I don't know where it is coming from. I just want the strings, not the piano, but when I go into sforzando and choose BIAB strings, or Finale string section, or anything, I get no sound out of it, no little midi dots or lines or anything. I tell you what, I'll go back and reconstruct the problem with nothing in RB except one track, the sforzando track, and see if I can duplicate my problem and perhaps make it clearer. I do know I can do this in Reaper, but I really, really like BIAB/RealBand that you can choose to see the chords that are playing.

I think Eddie was doing this in RB the other day.
So in the Midi Device Settings you set MIDI In to your keyboard, disable any default midi out or default synths.
Highlight the track Sforzando is on and record, if you have it set to ASIO and ASIO Always on you should get sound when it's stopped.

Hi Marty,
After recording the notes and keeping the take, do the notes play back with the strings sound, even if you didn't hear strings while recording?

Yes, Ken (6 days later), the notes play back with the sforzando strings sound. But now that doesn't help me while I'm actually recording the music.

You must have another midi out device set of a default synth set.

Hi Marty If you mean your through voice is not the track selected voice. Have you checked your Options/preferences/midi Thru make sure there is a tick in Track Specific. This way you should hear the track voice when you play your keyboard. I have written quite a long article about this sort of thing in Realband you may find some of this helpful

One of my must have preferences is to have the selected track voice play thu from the midi keyboard not the default piano.
This is easy in Realband’s Options / preferences / midi /midi thru / set track specific
This way if I am recording a trumpet by playing notes into a track while recording I hear a trumpet or what ever other instrument I choose on any track I hear that tracks voice .
