#5 Week 5
This song rocks a little, southern roots rock with a some Neil Young influence. I'm enjoying posting these songs here and appreciate
very much the kind words and feedback that I'm getting. I'm only able to drop in about once a week so I'll try to catch up on songs that I haven't heard here yet. Thanks for listening and commenting.

Get Out While We Can
© 2014 K Leverett

[Link no longer valid]

The autumn leaves say summers really gone
All the endless days and nights
Turn to stone

Once a homecoming queen
Now she’s waitressing
Wasting away
In someone else’s dying dream

I will wait for you
Tell your boss at the diner you’re thru
Blue eyed girl in a black and white town
We could leave tonight
Without a sound

Girl run away with me
Leave this place to your old man
Pack your bags, I’ll start the car
Girl let’s get out while we can

Gentle rain falls on a sleepy little town
Got me wondering why
We’re still hanging around

I will wait for you
Tell your boss at the diner you’re thru
Blue eyed girl in a black and white town
We could leave tonight
Without a sound

Girl run away with me
Leave this place to your old man
Pack your bags, I’ll start the car
Girl let’s get out while we can

Kenny,

Cool song and tracks! A lot of energy in this. Definitely has a bit of a Neil vibe - and yet still original...

I thought the vocal needed to be up just a hair. Then I thought I might have heard a little distortion in the guitars from being driven too hard, so the answer might be to back them off a bit - which would bring the vocal up some... and a terrific vocal it is - sung with heart!!!

The solo guitar seemed like it was stretched beyond it's limit - what was played sounded really good, but there was a wooble to it......

None of that is intended to take away from how good this is... I really like it. I dig what you are doing...

Good rock song. suited your vocals and agree with Floyd I'd like to hear them a bit louder. Overall, very nice and I enjoyed my listen.

This had a nice John Melloncamp vibe to me..... NY I think is a stretch.... but I can kinda hear the influence a bit...

Nice groove..... I too, like the song and mostly agree with Floyd.

I'd say turn up the vocals quite a bit...

I agree on the solo.... too much hand vibrato on the playing..... and a wrong note. Did you play the solo or is it the real track? It had the feel of a 1960's psychedelic solo.... over the top fuzz and vibrato that seemed to rule the music world in those days. Just lay back and play. (if that was you playing it)

Second thing on the solo.... I wouldn't use it to end the song. It leaves the song sounding unfinished.... put the solo in the song and then come back to the chorus after it...then end the song with a tag on the chorus. Just a thought.... I think about stuff like that all the time.

Hi Kenny,

this is a good rock song and your vocals fit
the genre quite well.
Floyd is right about the lead guitar, it sounds
artificial.
Enjoyable listen though.

Kenny, I like the song. Some good lines-" blue eyed girl in a black and white town" nice. Turn up the vocal. The lead is stretched too far as already mentioned. I enjoyed my listen. Tom

Killer song!! Great feel, great energy. The "seize the moment" motif is such a wonderful one for songs, and you did it right. The grit, energy, and emotion reminds me of Springsteen although your vocal is more like Neil Young. I agree the vocal should come up some. Also, I think the effect may be a bit too strong although esthetically it's perfect. Great job on this!! Take care. Greg

Lots to like in this song. You've already received plenty of feedback regarding possible changes so I'll just say I like what I heard and hope you'll revisit the arrangement and mix as you've got the gist of a good song.

I really like this song, Kenny.

I think it is the guitar solo that sounds a bit like Neil Young, and do not know if that is what you meant.

I also think that the recording is fine. The overall high quality of the lyrics, melody and playing are great.

One thing that is not great is that I spent 10 minutes searching for this thread (guessing there would be one) after I heard the song on Soundcloud.

The 'Search' feature on here has got to be improved.

Kenny good stuff!
Guitar magic at 3:25 smile
I agree with most that maybe vocal a bit closer.

Here is offbeat thought..
Your choruses really shape this song, especially endings of first three lines.

I will wait for you
Tell your boss at the diner you’re thru
Blue eyed girl in a black and white town

I think, it might sound more powerful and better accented if you put short guitar solo licks at the end of phrases to kind of echo the vocals.

Some great grungy elements in this. I like your vocals...pull them up, leave them back--I didn't miss a word. Not being a lead guitar player, I can't really comment except to say that the guitar got under my skin in a good way. Another good 'un, Kenny. Thanks.

I missed this one first time around as well. Loved this tune. Excellent backtrack. Super vocal and loved the guitar track. This really did have the Neil Young solo vibe to it. Well done..

Hey,

Thanks for digging this out again, I guess
I haven't listened to it in years, I think it was meant to
sound like a raw garage band live take kinda thing.
I wasn't very clear in my original mentioning of Neil Young
I was thinking more about the song structure
like "Cortez" just a ripping guitar solo at the end meant
to be played as a seven minute jam like Dave Matthews Band or
something similar. You should learn good song structure so
that you understand how you're breaking it sometimes.
Don't let anyone tell you how a song should be done,
Rock & Roll would have died in maybe the early sixties
if rules weren't broken. I love the flat note on the solo at the end,
so live and raw, Aerosmithian even.
Glad that you enjoyed it, thanks for the kind words.
