I know "Fall out Boy"!! ...well kinda.
Several years ago I needed a set of strings for my guitar so I took a quick drive over to the local music store. When I got there I was shocked. A long line around the building of people standing at the door. I got out of my car and wondered to the front of the line. There was a employee and I asked what was going on. He told me Fall out boy was inside and signing autographs. I told him I only needed a set of string and that I would come back another day. He then told me, no problem he would escort me inside and get me the stings. Like a VIP he cleared the crowd for me to take me inside the building and to the counter. On the way in he said "ya wanna meet Fall out Boy? I can introduce ya.."
I had no idea who FOB was, and I was surprised by the offer and could only say, " no thanks, I don't want to get in front of everyone else here." That's my story. I went home and hit YouTube to see what all the fuss was about. I still kick myself in the butt for not taking the opportunity. I guess that makes me a true baby boomer.

Funny thing is you may not realize that 'Millennials' are people currently between the age of 22-37. I believe most people envision them a lot younger.
Falling into this generation myself, even now with the power of the internet, I am falling behind what is new and 'in'.
What I find really interesting is the contrast between the Millennials within the same generation. I most likely would find it a challenge trying to find common ground with someone who was 22 in 2018.
It's hard to believe things from the 90's are considered 'old' or 'classic' now. Technically, one could say things like Tool, Korn, and Marilyn Manson have now become 'Classic Rock' hahaha.

I knew what music my parents liked, because they listened to it on a big ol' record player that was always playing in our living room.
My first child was gen X. I knew most of his music, because he played it on CD and I heard it playing in his room and car. When I go to his house, he still plays it through a variety of devices that broadcast it through the airwaves in the room so every body can hear it. ("Alexa.. play Smashing Pumpkins...")
My second child is a millennial and I never hear what she listens to because she listens with ear buds. So now the circle of inter generational music recognition is broken.

I find it really interesting that millennials are the ones that people are the most concerned about and compare themselves to the most, even though millennials were born between 1981 and 1996. Most of them already have kids of their own, mortgages, or have had dedicated careers for 10 years for those in their late to mid thirties. I think that there is a misconceptions that millennials are a lot younger than they really are, but the oldest of them are getting close to hitting their 4th decade.
Personally, I know the vast majority of the items on the Boomer list but I'm not a Boomer, and knew less of what was on the millenial list even though I'm a millenial. Still an interesting collection of names and shows at the end of the day.

I am definitely boomer, and I did recognize almost half the names in the millennial list, I've heard some of them, but if you put a song on by them I wouldn't be able to tell you who did it.
But then I do a lot of research for writing styles for Band-in-a-Box and I read Billboard every once in a while.
And my parents were in the "Big Band" era, I listened to their recordings of Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, etc., and enjoyed them very much.
As a working musician, I try to listen to a lot of genres of music that I may or may not have an opportunity to play. I find I can subconsciously borrow something from newer music, older music, foreign music, ethnic music or whatever that improves my playing as a musician. A little Jazz, Klezmer, Salsa, Country, Cape Verdean, Reggae, or whatever my find it's way into an improvised sax solo on a rock song giving the listener a little surprise.
And improvising a solo is about prediction and surprise. If the listener can predict where you are going most of the time, the listener will get bored and stop listening. If he or she cannot predict where you are going most of the time, the same thing happens. So you have to play the crowd, letting them predict what you are going to play next most of the time, but surprise them enough to keep their interest.
But I get that is getting a little off-topic.
From the boomer list, many of the references were from my parents; Art Linkletter, Minnie Pearl, and Jack Benny, and others I recognize the names like the millennial list but can't identify like Larry Hagman, Barney Miller and Hill Street Blues. Probably because I don't watch Television.

That's not entirely true of Millenials. I didn't have home internet until I was 14, so I still had to get all my entertainment from my imagination and from playing outdoors when I was younger. We only had two computers in our entire school that had internet connection and it was entirely reserved for teacher resources, so they were not accessible to students in any way. Granted, not all Millenials have the same experiences as I do. Although I would say that's probably entirely true of those who are 21 and younger (and I think were the actual comparisons are being drawn). What do they call them again? Gen Z? At the end of the day though each generation will have their kinda "it" bands and TV shows though, and it's super cool to see where how different those popular shows or musicians are.

Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums!
