HALion 6 is on sale until November the 30th - check it out at Steinberg.net. It is not often on sale.
HALion 6 is a fantastic sampler/synth/workstation all in one package.. many people think it's much better than Kontakt and Omnisphere - just not as well-known. It comes with more than 3000 presets, and you will be able to create your own sounds, instruments or even libraries within the software if that is your cup of tea.
The sound quality and the possibilities within this software is awesome in my humble opinion.
I especially like the arpeggiator-functions which has been adopted from Yamaha's Motif-synth. 1000s of presets for that too and you can make your own advanced arpeggiators as well.

Will, you forgot to mention it has a GM mode  In my opinion it is almost like a hybrid between Kontakt and Sampletank. Price is the lowest I think I ever saw.

Does Halion need a dongle on a PC? If it does, that would be a deal breaker for me.

just a Steinberg account and an on-computer elicenser (it's unobtrusive and free )

It does not require a dongle, but you can opt to purchase and use Steinberg's dongle if you wish (which is not an iLok dongle, but its own proprietary format).
You can register your computer with the license, which locks the license to that computer only (and Steinberg only gives you one).
So, you don't need the dongle, but if you plan on using Halion or any other Steinberg product on more than one computer, the dongle is the way to go. Also, if your computer crashes and you can't recover, you can potentially lose your license and have to buy again. (Of course, likewise if the dog eats your dongle - you should see my DVD remote that my dog got a hold of).
iLok does it similarly with their license management system (you can either lock the license to a computer, or to the dongle).
That being said, my Steinberg eLicenser dongle has worked flawlessly for almost a decade now. I just plug it into my USB hub right next to my iLok dongle.

I think you can manage / transfer licence from computer to dongle and vice versa right from PC within seconds.

I have HALion 6 which is indeed a fantastic software instrument. I agree the arpeggio feature is brilliant. It also includes HALion Sonic 3 which I use more that HALion 6. HALion 6 has more editing capabilities and sound shaping whereas Sonic 3 is more basic - just use the sounds. If it is on offer then definitely worth going for although I wonder if there’s a new version around the corner.

Same here. If I want to create new sounds from scratch I use Halion 6, but if I just want to play I use Halion Sonic 3 which has an easier interface. It's great both programs are included.
