I recently purchased a Dell monitor,

Unfortunately, it doesn't support VGA input. My computer only has VGA, so I need to convert the signal to either HDMI, or DP. What are the advantages to using either one - will I gain/lose resolution by using either HDMI vs. DP?

Thanks,

Bob

Hey there 90db

Just to be certain, you do not have a DVI Out from your computer? If you do, going DVI to HDMI is super easy.

If you are running just a VGA, you will be fine, but you will want to look at an upgrade to fully take advantage of this monitor.

This is a bit Jerry-rigged, but I have done this more times then I'd like to count:

VGA > DVI (I-D, doesn't matter) > DVI to HDMI

No point in using Display-Port as that is typically for 2k/4k/144hz etc.

Really cool monitor, the 1920x1200 is an interesting resolution.

Het Mikke,

My computer has a HDMI output, I connected that to the HDMI input on the monitor, and I get a message onscreen that there is no DP cable attached. I don't understand why I need a DP cable at all. It should work with HDMI only.

Regards,

Bob

Right, if the computer is really so old it ONLY has VGA it's time to upgrade. If that's not an option look into installing a cheap graphics card. Even the cheapest ones will have DVI and probably HDMI too.

Hey Bob,

Chances are you monitor has a different input channel for DP then HDMI since they are different formats.

There should be a HDMI Input channel on your monitor, if your PC has HDMI, it should connect directly to it.

Also, if you have a dedicated GPU (Graphics Card), the Outputs on your motherboard won't work, and you will need to the outputs from your GPU.

It certainly should work with only HDMI to HDMI. That quality is as good as you need for your resolution.

As for it not working, of course you have to use the monitor controls to select the appropriate input. Could there be another cable attached (besides the HDMI) that has no signal?

I will see if I can access the monitor control panel.

Also I've seen cheap HDMI cables not work from PC to monitor. Try another cable or see if you can use your current cable on a different device in the house like a TV to see if it's good.

I can access part of the control panel, but when I set the input to HDMI, nothing happens. Dell Support is a joke, as well.

Open the monitor's settings. there should be an option there to select the HDMI input.

In the security biz, I run into this all the time. Use the menu to choose the input type.

on the flip side.... HDMI should give you the highest video resolution. Way better than VGA. So if push comes to shove and the HDMI thing just doesn't work....go to amazon and get an adapter for $10 but understand that the resolution will only be VGA

edit: if you have a different DP cable, swap it. On the monitor settings, be sure you save it before closing out. I make that mistake all the time.

Herb,

I set the input to HDMI, hit SAVE but nothing happens! Do I need to reboot the monitor or something?

No. you shouldn't need a reboot.

So my next step would be to try a different computer.... maybe a laptop with an HDMI out. see if that will work. and swap to a different cord as well.... all steps in playing detective.

All these modern things should automatically detect the input type and make the mode changes needed.

Borrow the cable from your TV if you have an HDMI DP cable there.

Another option is to call Dell tech support or chat to get help from them.

Hey! Pipeline beat me to it, and posted a picture of the inputs of your monitor.

It seems these are both inputs, but this also means you have multiple HDMI channels.

What I speculate is happening:

1 - You need to select the other HDMI Input Channel
2 - You might be using your Motherboard Outputs, make sure there isn't another HDMI port on your computer

If you haven't already checked it out, here is the user manual:

I selected each HDMI input. Still no joy.

to expand on one of the posts above I got the wrong connection once and got your problem. there might be 2 hdmi outputs - one from your motherboard and one from your graphics card - have a quick look and if ther are two try the other

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
