The metronome does work, if you use the default Windows MIDI device (in my experience).
(Often this introduces latency though)
Otherwise like I said I use a MIDI track and then can use any sound source I want for the click.
Opening or importing a file called Click.MID (which does the same thing as creating a MIDI click)is also quick and easy. I have one here -

Simple MIDI track you can change the instrument on easily by simply changing the note number (use sidestick, hihat cowbell or trash can, anything you want.
Also newer RB versions have a Click Track function. Kinda like the ACW Tempo feature on steroids.

As for VUs, the menu option of Window - Show VU Meter still works here, opening the older VU pop up, plus newer versions of RB have them in the bottom bar.
