David, thanx for that Chapman Trumpet info. I had not heard of that one before. It does sound great so it is on my wish list!

David, thanx for that Chapman Trumpet info. I had not heard of that one before. It does sound great so it is on my wish list! Yeah, I was really happy with the purchase. It's one of those instruments that really does sound as great as on the demos. Currently my daughter plays the EWI from a little netbook, so I ported the Chapman Trumpet to a .sfz. For slow songs, the legato is great, but I need to put together a version that doesn't have the transitions so she can use it on faster stuff. In the Kontakt instrument, you can just put it into Polyphonic mode, and the transitions disappear. Since I'm veering off topic, I'll also mention that I've been playing the Embertone Sensual Sax via the EWI as well. It's got (optional) "embellished" sampled legato, which can be a lot of fun to play. For $20, it's a steal, but it also requires the full version of Kontakt. Not the same as SWAM, but it'll do for now.

I just bought a wind controller and BIAB UltraPak+. I am a keyboard player and use the controller with a sound module. How can I use it with BIAB?

I can answer part of the question, assuming you're running Windows. First, you'll want to install the ASIO4All driver. This is a low-latency audio driver. Without it, audio will be routed through Window's default audio processing path, which will add a delay between you playing a note, and the note sounding: Next, you'll want to set the controller up in BiaB, as well as setting ASIO as your driver, and change the default instrument that sound when you play the controller to be something better than the default MIDI instrument, because it doesn't respond to breath pressure: - Plug in the breath controller so it's active
- Launch BiaB
- In the menu, choose Options | MIDI/Audio Driver Setup to open the dialog.
- In the MIDI Input Driver list, choose the controller (ex: USB-EWI) by double clicking it
- Click Use VSTi/DXi Synth
- Click Route MIDI Through MIDI Driver
- Click the button under Route MIDI Through MIDI Driver to bring up the VST/Synths/Plugins (synth in first slot) dialog.
- Notice that Default Synth is selected. This means you're setting the default synthesizer the BiaB plays when you play your controller.
- In the first dropdown of the Plugin list, choose the plugin player (Aria, Kontakt, or whatever you're using).
- If BiaB doesn't see your plugin, choose Add VSTi plugin from the list, and find your plugin. Where the plugin is located depends on the plugin you're using.
- Note that the second item in the dropdown says Forced MIDI Chan=1, which is good.
- Insert the instrument into the player
- Click the [X] in the dialog window to close it
- Click Audio Settings... button
- Under Audio Driver Type, choose ASIO to open the ASIO Audio Driver dialog box
- In the Select one ASIO Device, choose ASIO4ALL v2 by double-clicking
- Make sure Resampler Quality is set to Fast, or you'll still have a delay
- Click OK to close the ASIO Audio Driver dialog
- Click OK button to close the Audio Setting dialog
If this works, you should be able to play MIDI notes with your wind controller using BiaB, and hear the sound of your VSTi when you play it. Now, here's the catch - the sound you set for your controller isn't the sound assigned to the MIDI track! That is, it's the sound you'll hear when you play the controller, but not necessarily the sound you get when you play back the recording of the track. For that, BiaB uses the instrument assigned to the track. To change the instrument assigned to the track, it's similar to setting the Default Synth sound: - Click the Plugins tab of the Mixer
- On the melody instrument, click the first [None] to open the VST/Synths/Plugins (synth in first slot) dialog pops up
- In the first dropdown of the Plugin list, choose the plugin player (Aria, Kontakt, or whatever you're using).
- Insert the instrument into the player
I've never tried doing this before, so perhaps I've missed some simple way to hear the sound assigned to the track while you're recording. Hopefully someone else knows..?

To hear the instrument in real time you have to click ASIO Always On.

Just curious - how did The Trumpet turn out?
A SWAM Trumpet was announced last year, but the release date was pushed back until Spring 2019. Private demos were given at NAMM, but an actual release is some time off.
So I'm considering picking up The Trumpet instead of waiting for the SWAM version, but wondered if you (or anyone else) had a strong opinion about it.

Personally I'll take the SWAN interface over Kontakt's interface when it comes to using a wind controller. I find the nuances and options much easier to control with the SWAN interface. Plus saving your settings is easier with it. But another great sounding trumpet is the Screaming Trumpet by Realitone : https://realitone.com/products/screaming-trumpetIt comes with two different trumpets and currently is my go to trumpet. I will look at the SWAN trumpet with it comes out.

Plus saving your settings is easier with it. Hi, Mario. I believe it's also more lightweight, which is another factor. The primary use case is in a church setting, where the blend is more important than a strident trumpet tone. I thought I could hold out until Spring, but I listened to a bunch of demos, and the sound is starting to grow on me. I suspect in the long run I'll end up getting them both (and possibly selling off The Trumpet if they are essentially equal). Thanks!

To answer my own question - The Trumpet 3 is very nice.
Out of the box, it "just works", so I haven't had to fiddle with the Kontakt settings.
Oddly enough, the attack works better on the EWI with Breath Controller selected instead of Wind Controller.
If AudioModeling can top or equal this, it'll be quite a feat.
