not sure how long this will last a LIMITED number of Ostinato Woodwinds TODAY only during their 12 days of Christmas sale https://www.sonokinetic.net/over the years on the second day I've obtained free the Strings, Brass and now Woodwinds collections NEED Kontatk EDIT all you need is the Kontakt Player - so no need to buy ANYTHING good luck Larry

Apparently they were only giving away 2500 free copies. They were gone in the matter of a few hours. The guys over on the Cakewalk forum were all over this and hitting Sonokinetic servers pretty hard.

To that end, does anybody know of a good sounding free plugin for horns/woodwinds? Most of what I can find for free sound really tinny and you can tell they are synthesizer sounds.

Yep, three years in a row on day 2 of their 12 days of Christmas Sonokinetic gave a way a limited number of there Ostinato libs.
Year one it was Stings and it was HERE at PG in this very forum someone turned me onto it (you John?) I can't remember who but THANKS whoever it was!
Then year two, last year, it was the Brass, and this year it was Woodwinds
Who knows what they'll do next year
Their stuff is good so I'll watch the daily sales for the next 10 days and a new something will Be up for sale in about 30 minutes from this post

To that end, does anybody know of a good sounding free plugin for horns/woodwinds? That "free" is quite a catch. The VSCO Community Edition might have some good woodwinds in it. The focus is on orchestral sounds, so it depends on the sort of music that you're doing. Chet Singer has coded a number of physically modeled instruments including a flute and alto sax. The instruments can be played using a breath controller or the keyboard and CC11. They require the free Reaktor Player, but... it has a 30 minute time limit. In the "fairly inexpensive" category, the Korg M1 VSTi is currently on sale for $25. Depending on what you need, it might work. It's not great, but there are some decent sounds in it, and it's stand-alone, so you don't need the Kontakt player.
