That "free" is quite a catch.

The VSCO Community Edition might have some good woodwinds in it. The focus is on orchestral sounds, so it depends on the sort of music that you're doing.

Chet Singer has coded a number of physically modeled instruments including a flute and alto sax. The instruments can be played using a breath controller or the keyboard and CC11. They require the free Reaktor Player, but... it has a 30 minute time limit.

In the "fairly inexpensive" category, the Korg M1 VSTi is currently on sale for $25. Depending on what you need, it might work. It's not great, but there are some decent sounds in it, and it's stand-alone, so you don't need the Kontakt player.
