How can I teach or (assist in teaching) BIAB to two deaf kids? I am aware of software for the blind but not for deaf kids aged 11 and 12. 5th graders.

TIA

Can't deaf people feel notes, feel the vibrations? If there were some way to press a speaker against them so they'd feel the vibes?

Donny, I don't really know the answer, but do these young people sense music through vibration? Are the partially or totally deaf?
There was an excellent video of a show contestant who sang, even though she was totally deaf.
The link is here
I don't know if that provides any form of direction.

Lame and Trev,

Thank you both for weighing in on this.

I am well aware of programs for blind users, in fact, one such program was written by and for a BIAB user. The program name eludes me at the moment. I believe it is called Jaws.

@Trev, I had seen that video and was thrilled to see what that young deaf lady has been able to accomplish although deaf. Simply amazing.

TED TALKS(r} has a video of a young woman who plays and teaches marimba while stone deaf by picking up the vibrations through her bare feet. She is a great encouragement to me as a disabled person. Her name is Evelyn Glinney and this 30 minute talk demonstration will make your day.

At what level is their deafness? If it is just ear drums that are damaged, and the Hair cells are OK, then using something like “Aftershokz” bone headphones could be used.

Originally I experimented with transducers and a small 1 watt amp and streamed mp3 through it then applied the transducer to parts of my scull and even my teeth to find where the best sound would be obtained, if any. I found that the idea was working, so I did some research on bone headphones, bought a pair and found they really helped. Since then I have upgraded to Cochlea bone implants., fantastic for streaming from my piano into my head, no one else can hear my lousy playing………(except for the tapping on the keys).

What specific skills are you intending to teach them? And how do you see BiaB fitting into that?

I can imagine a lot of possibilities, but without knowing what you're trying to accomplish, it's hard to say how this tools fits into the mix.

What I find puzzling is the way you framed this - you're not teaching "music theory" or "composition", but BIAB?

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Yes, especially the bass notes. Our band played at a Christmas party for deaf people. It was one of the strangest jobs. Not a sound from the people there but once we started playing they all danced. If I remember correctly none of them wore shoes.

I arrived early to a restaurant.
The manager asks, "do you mind waiting a bit?"
I said no.
"Good", he said. "Take these drinks to table 3"

Glendene,

I really don't know their level of deafness but I assume that there are definite thresholds required before we can claim "deafness" under the law. These kits are called deaf.

As a disabled veteran, I found the 34 minute demonstration to be the most encouraging that I have ever seen.

Very impressive. Did a quick Google search, she is quite accomplished! Has a collection of over 2000 percussion instruments...did even know there were that many!

Thanks for posting.

David,

I want to teach them the basics of the program so they can progress on their own. The tutorials, although well written, are not 'deaf-friendly'.
