I have just finished installing Band in a Box 2019 on my Windows 10 computer system and immediately it disabled Pro Tools. I cannot even open up ProTools.
I have been a Band in a Box user for 25+ years and a ProTools user for 10+ years and nothing like this has ever happened until this year.
Band in a Box works fine generating new arrangements, but I cannot even open up Pro Tools to check any settings.
The error message I get from Pro Tools is:
"The selected ASIO audio device could not be initialized. Please choose another audio device"
I have been using Pro Tools continuously for 10 years and have never had this problem - I cannot even open ProTools to look at what device is in use.
Additionally when I try to record anything with Audacity, I get a similar message "Error while opening sound devise"
Both of these effects started happening immediately after I installed Band in a Box 2019.
I need Pro Tools to work. What do I do?

Can you Reinstall your audio drivers. It sounds like they are lost or messed up. Is there a driver for ASIO driver you can reload?
BIAB – 2025, Reaper (current), i7-12700F Processor, 32GB DDR4-3200MHz RAM, 1TB WD Black NVMe SSD, 2TB WDC Blue SSD, 1TB WD Blue, 2 TB SK NVMe, 6 TB External, Motu Audio Express 6x6

My Pro Tools was not broken before I installed BIAB 2019. I don't know anything about installing ASIO drivers. I don't modify Pro Tools at all - when it gets broken, it stays broken for a long time because I don't know how to fix it. But it has been stable and working since version 11 and I just used it to record some live music before BIAB messed it up.
BIAB has no problem playing on its own, so obviously some drivers are working. I hate it when newly installed programs mess up what was already working.
Perhaps I should refrain from commenting further. I am furious about this because I need to record with Pro Tools now. I will wait until the tech support kicks in. I hope they are not out for the rest of the year.

Did you close Biab and reboot? Some drivers can only use one device at a time, tell us the specs of your system and what audio interface you're using. See all the info in my sig? You need to include all that info too, it's helps us with questions like this.

Biab/RB latest build, Win 11 Pro, Ryzen 5 5600 G, 512 Gig SSD, 16 Gigs Ram, Steinberg UR22 MkII, Roland Sonic Cell, Kurzweil PC3, Hammond SK1, Korg PA3XPro, Garritan JABB, Hypercanvas, Sampletank 3, more.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Yes I did reboot with no change. I installed the latest build of BIAB and tried again. This time, not only would Pro Tools not open, but it rejected the BIAB DAW plugin, saying that it is not a valid 64 bit AAX plugin.
This is so frustrating - I am in the middle of a Pro Tools project that I have to finish by year's end and now PT will not open up.
I am using Windows 10.x with build 608 of BIAB 2019, an HP ENVY Pheonix 810 PC which has 8 co-processors and a 2 TB internal disc and a 4 TB external disc and a Yamaha AG06 audio interface, ProTools v 11. I have been using BIAB and ProTools simultaneously for years with no problem.

Hi Bob, I can feel your frustration! I've looked around the internet and the following Sweetwater site... https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/why-wont-pro-tools-launch/...gave the below information. Plug-Ins
One of the first things Pro Tools does when launching is look at what plug-ins are installed, if they’re authorized, and whether or not they are compatible. If Pro Tools stops launching while scanning the plug-ins, there is probably a plug-in that is causing the failure. To verify this, go to the Pro Tools plug-ins folder, move all of the plug-ins to a temporary folder, and then relaunch Pro Tools. If Pro Tools launches when the plug-ins have been removed, then you have verified that the issue is caused by a plug-in(s). Updating your plug-ins and/or removing plug-ins that are incompatible usually resolves this issue. With the above in mind, go to the plugins folder in ProTools and delete the "Band-in-a-Box DAW VST Plugin.AAX". I'm guessing that that is what is stopping ProTools from loading. Regards, Noel

C:\Users\songwriterbob\AppData\Roaming\Avid\Pro Tools
have a look for your audio device ****ASIO.pio you usually move the file out of the folder and backup elsewhere and reinstall the asio audio driver, upon Pro Tools boot it should ask to select a driver and then it will write the new ****ASIO.pio input/out preferences.

Thanks Noel for the suggestion.
I completely uninstalled the BIAB DAW plugin and ProTools still tells me "The selected ASIO device cannot be initialized. Please choose another audio device".
It's pretty hard to choose another device if I cannot even open the program and see which is chosen.
I believe BIAB changed some global setting when it was installed and I don't know how to change it back.
- Bob

Bob,
When you go to open ProTools, is BIAB running? If it is, close BIAB down, restart your computer and, without opening any other program, see if ProTools opens.
As far as I'm aware, the BIAB installation does not modify DAW settings in any way.
Also, before you restart your computer, double-check your \Protools plugin directory to make sure that the Band in a box AAX file was completely uninstalled.
Regards, Noel

uhh, protools .. MAC? On windows disabling the unused ASIO drivers might fix matters; don'remove them, but disable. I had problems with Waves plugin and synth stuff i never use (SG, VG2 Studiorack or something alike taking over my 'sound'settings). But indeed the BIAB VST AAX would be a prime suspect ... F

Also check what driver BIAB is using and change it from ASIO to another driver choice if it is set to ASIO.
Per Noel: "When you go to open ProTools, is BIAB running? If it is, close BIAB down, restart your computer and, without opening any other program, see if ProTools opens."
Do a cold restart. (completely turn off the computer and let it set for a few seconds to a minute before restarting.)
It seems to me your ASIO driver is hanging. This procedure may force it to release and ProTools should have access to it on restart if that is the case.
BIAB 2025:RB 2025, Latest builds: Dell Optiplex 7040 Desktop; Windows-10-64 bit, Intel Core i7-6700 3.4GHz CPU and 16 GB Ram Memory.

Charlie said "Also check what driver BIAB is using and change it from ASIO to another driver choice if it is set to ASIO. "
This is important. Most all ASIO drivers can handle only one program at a time and it will mess up your system if it tries to load two ASIO driven programs. If you have a PC change both the 32 and 64 bit versions of BiaB to MME drivers. Keep your Pro Tools at ASIO. That may solve your problems. Note I do not know what the MME Windows' driver's equivalent is on a MAC.
When you are at the checkout line and they ask if you found everything say "Why, are you hiding stuff?"
64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions to help. I swear sometimes I hate how complicated it is to run more than one audio program on a Windows machine.
My solution was simple if mystifying.
I installed ASIO4All which replaced whatever happened to my ASIO driver that ProTools didn't like. As a result of installing a new ASIO driver, I was able to open ProTools without the error windows that previously prevented me from doing so, and in the Playback Engine Menu item, I was now able to switch back to the Yamaha / Steinberg driver that came with my AG06 mixer / audio interface.
Now Band in a Box and Pro Tools work together in harmony and I can back to making music using both programs.
My experience may not help other users, but I appreciate all the suggestions people made and I am ready to explore all the new features of BIAB 2019 and export my files to ProTools to polish them off.
Thanks to all who responded.

I remember when Pro Tools would not let you use any other audio device other than Avid/M-Audio !
