If you have Cubase 7 legit (there's a much used illegal one around) you might have Halion Sonic, the more extended version compared to SE. F

Hey Fiddler thanks a lot,

Finally got it to work, couldn't find the dll though Steniberg vst plugins is usually my default location, so had to do a hard drive search to find it.

Turned up in the Cakewalk plugins folder. I like the sounds in there, though it seems I will have to always set it each time to GM in options in Halion.

Update:Seems the GM settting sticks after all so that is even better.

Another one to play with, thanks again as I thought I couldn't use it in biab.

Wendy, perhaps the TTS-1 free with Cakewalk by BandLab? Peter Gannon posted about this recently in a sticky post just above titled “No brainer ...”.

https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=511593#Post511593

It would mean switching to the 64-bit version of BIAB, though.

Thank Noel, I can use that synth, but I was referring to the above post on using Halion SE free. I set the options to gm but get no sounds at all.

Thanks,

I have been using the TTS-1 for a few years now, came with Cakewalk music centre I think, another good one to mess around with.

I find that even with different Midi styles its good to try all of the default synths, to try and get a better sound.

I could never have enough default symths.

GM.DLL

Quick correction, the default file read by SynthFont is actually GM.DLS, not GM.DLL. This is the same file (as I understand it) that was wrapped by the Coyote WT DXi synth and the same file used by the Microsoft Wavetable synth you get with Windows.

Of course, if you use Synthfont, you can replace it with any GM-compatible soundfont set you wish.

All I want from midi are for the instruments to sounds like what theyre supposed to be.Techies love allthe fancy screens, pretty knobs and buttons and jumping through hoops to get stuff to work. Not me.I just vwant to make 'X' my default like my Forte is now and it "work". No?
Wendy

Wendy,

What kind of sound are you trying to get out of your synth? Synthy sounds (evolving swirly shimmery stuff, or pumping trance) or natural instrument sounds to feed MIDI into and have them sound like natural instruments?

TBF, I picked up Vacuum pro as well, and it's layout and sounds are modeled on classic old-school hardware synths, and, although it excels at hitting the specific mark it aimed for, it's also unfortunately one of the least intuitive, and visually incomprehensible VSTs I ever encountered in my life :-( It also uses terminology and naming conventions that are trying to be clever instead of the industry standards.

Happy New year Deacon.
Ok-lets try and sort out what i want.Im using BB in 32 bit-no interest yet in 64. Ive got Forte DXi and the midi sounds FROM PRE-EXISTING MIDI STYLES are better than the original ones. But not great-as in they dont often sound like the instruments theyre supposed to.Im looking for a BETTER DXi or VSTi hopefully free that will give the existing instutments in BB midi styles more reality.Id make it my default.
So am I just chasing rainbows?
Wendy

Actually, there is this incredible free orchestral Rompler you can find right here. Let me know if you have any issues getting it installed and set up (the downside of it is that it does not come with an installer like so many others these days). Basically unzip the thing, take the unzipped folder, with the library subfolder and .dll combined and just drop it into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VstPlugIns, and load it into the plugin slot the same way you did with vacuum pro.

Here the link: http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?plugin=VSCO2_Rompler&id=2734

I've had the same problem with the Halion SE. Everything's correctly installed, I can see the MIDI activity of all playing tracks, no sound at all, no matter what I tried. I ended up uninstalling it.

now that you mention it, i had the same, but only with BIAB 2019, i found mine working when i set the VST's output to audio channel 16 .. it worked since, and forgot about it. I checked it just now and reloaded it; found the main output working now. Beats me, LoL. PS i dont have SE installed but Halion 3 and Halion.
