You know how sometimes a MIDI instrument will get stuck and won't shut up, and you usually have a "panic" command somewhere to get it unstuck? Well, that's what's going on with my system, when I run BiaB 64-bit on my 64-bit Win7 system. Doesn't happen with 32-bit. But now it typically won't shut up when I hit the panic key (F12). And it happens all the time, with every single piece of music with a MIDI track.

I was hoping this problem would be addressed in build 610, but it wasn't. This problem is so annoying, I can't even use the 64-bit version of BiaB. When I was running build 609, I was able to get it to shut up if I punched the F12 key six or eight times, but now even that isn't doing anything.

Most annoying. I remain hopeful that build 611 will be here soon and that it will address this majorly annoying problem.

I don't know from Controller 123, I do know that F12 is supposed to work. But it doesn't.

currently the only way I know of, to stop the stuck midi note is to mute/un-mute the offending track...

Yeah, that'll work, but then I don't have that instrument available. So this is not really a viable solution. And what if I'm running a tune that has two or three or four MIDI instruments?

yes, you do, if you immediately un-mute...

Good call, fiddler! I just did a reset to my setup and the stuck MIDI has completely disappeared.

Then I did an undo to see if it would come back, and it does. Hm. So I did a redo to make it go away, and it wouldn't. The BiaB started sounding really weird, and then crashed. So when I brought it back up, I restored to factory settings again, and it started out fine with no drone. But then suddenly it started droning again but stopped -- dunno why. So I went to change the DXi synth to something that sounds remotely like musical instruments and then it started sounding all weird again, and then crashed. I just brought it up again and it started out fine, but then started in on the droning again. F12 won't make it shut up, either.

So I thought this was a good call at first, but turns out it's still a problem. Plus there seems to be a problem with the way it's handling DXi's as well. I'll need to spend some more time with that problem in the hopes of better understanding it.

I think that I have read somewhere in these forums that some people had to press F12 many times to stop the held note. Have your tried that?

a PS. i had GUI errors regarding VSTs, not for BIAB really. un installed all the Visual basics and reinstalled them in sequential order both x86 and x64 versions after downloading the newest from Microsoft. Also check your DotNet and windows DirectX version. In my case fixed a lot of misbehavior.

If you’re using VST SynthFont as the synth, you could try switching to TTS DXi (that’s the Roland Hypercanvas) https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=511593#Post511593

That doesn't work for me... Mute/Un-Mute is the only action that works for me. I hope they'll soon fix "F12"

Dr. Gannon, I'm using TTS1 and am getting occasional stuck midi notes on Melody track only...
edit: F12 does not clear note...

Using the MIDI editor check to make sure that a CC64, the sustain pedal, was not inserted into the track. A CC64 turned on, a number between 64-127, can hold a note indefinitely. It will take a CC64 setting of 0-63 to turn the note off.

The same holds true for CC66, sustenuto, so check for both.

I also still get the occasional stuck note in TTS-1. Hitting F12 does not shut it off, nor does setting the "send extra note-off" command. I hadn't tried muting/unmuting (will have to try that next time). The problem was bad in the early builds of BIAB2019, but just sporadic now. I turn it off by launching the TTS-1 interface and there is a button there to turn off all the stuck notes. Likewise, there is a button in Synthfont to do the same.

so for the wish list:? a general all channels 'all note on/off' option on stop for BIAB. Most midi capable sequencers have it, never realized BIAB did not, apart for this then (see below). In my case i never used it, and i'll give it a try with these hanging notes when entering/editing melody notes manually with the mouse ...

Well, I just ran into something interesting. Since nothing I've tried seems to work in 64-bit, I've dropped back to 32-bit. Using JBridge, I configured a song file where all the MIDI instruments were using TTS-1 and suddenly, the melody instrument developed this stuck on syndrome. I tried hitting F12 multiple times and it didn't do any good. I tried muting and unmuting the track and that didn't do any good. Finally I tried "Panic" from its menu selection. That stopped the music momentarily, and it came back with the stuck notes silent -- finally -- but, and this is where it starts getting weird -- every MIDI instrument had flanger applied. Now, when I was assigning TTS-1 to various instruments, on the string part only I activated the flanger. Somehow this activation got spread out to all channels. But here's where it gets weirder. After I used the menu selection "Panic" -- all my TTS-1 selections reverted back to default, when viewed from the Plugin tab. The music still sounded as if TTS-1 was active, near as I could tell with all the flanger business going on, but it wasn't showing up as the active Plugin. And none of the channels had flanger selected! So how am I supposed to turn it off when it isn't selected? I tried pretending the flanger was still there by loading it in and then deselecting it, hoping that would get it to quit, but that didn't do any good.

I didn't know what else to do but reload the song. At least that worked -- and the melody instrument stayed unstuck too. For now at least.

See my comment about downloaded songs in your other thread. Stuck notes are usually something in a D/L midi file or Biab song. Try creating the same song yourself as a test.

Hey Bob, your explanation doesn't really match what I was experiencing. The notes weren't stuck from the start. They happened after I started tweaking the file -- as in adding TTS-1. And when I reloaded the file -- that I'd reconfigured with TTS-1 and saved that way, the stuck notes didn't reappear. At least not for the next several minutes when I was last listening to it. And there's still the matter of all the other weird stuff that happened.

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
