I'm playing around with some old Realbook tunes and I'm running into an occassional issue where, as soon as I start up a song after editing the volume levels, they all revert back to about 60%. This is happening with just some of the tunes, so I'm wondering what's special about them such that they resist the changes in volume. I've looked through the preferences and a few other locations and can't find anything that would seem to indicate why this is occurring. What have I missed?

Hi Michael,

Are the songs midi-based styles?

Volumes can also be set in styles. This means that if you are loading a song file that also loads its own style associated with it, the default volumes could be loaded when that style is loaded.

Have you tried saving the song with the edited volumes with a new file name?

Regards,
Noel

As Noel mentioned, MIDI can contain Volume information.
Open the track in the Piano-Roll editor and look for a Control 7 event (or possibly others)

Michael, are these internet songs or ones you created? I've found lots of downloaded songs can be quite wonky. But correcting a bad song is still faster than creating it from scratch.

In addition to Video Track's CC7 suggestion also look for CC2 and CC11 data. All three of these CCs will affect volume.

Good luck.

OK, a random thought;
Why does toilet paper need a commercial? Who's not buying it?

Bob is correct. If you did DL this from the Internet then check all tracks for the CCs. Some people put the volume controls (CCs) in different tracks making it harder to find the problem.

Good luck.

For RTs etc you can set them per bar:

Guys, thanks for all the feedback. I'm away from my DAW right now, but I'll check the CCs once I'm back there with the files that are displaying this tendency.

Yep, these old Realbook tunes I d/l'd from the Internet years ago. I use them mostly as practice backing tracks.

The common reason for this is that the style has been edited to dis-allow volume changes.

With the offending song open, go to File/Stylemaker/Edit Current Style/Misc and make sure that the box "Allow Volume Changes With Style" is NOT TICKED. Yes, I know you would expect it to be ticked to allow volume changes but PG have had this wording backwards from day one and I have given up mentioning it on the wishlist. Exit the Stylemaker, save this style and it will now allow volume changes to be saved with the song.

As far as I know all PG styles have this box un-ticked but sometimes styles have been modified by users and third party styles often get it wrong.

Thank you, Tony. That did the trick. As a linguist, who fervently believes that words mean things, I share your bafflement. I wonder if the PG demigods can possibly articulate what "Allow Volume Changes With Style" being ticked is supposed to mean? When, in fact, it does the exact opposite?

It's Canadian for "Let the style set the volume." cool

Ah, well that probably explains a lot. Two cultures separated by a common language and all.
