Hi Gals and Fellows.

Got this doodle to share. This was an experiment for me of using a midi arrangement that I have started a couple of months ago in an arranger software and completely forgot about till last week. BIAB was not very kind to me on this one and I used some unorthodox methods to marry the Midi arrangement with realtracks, but in the end, I won. I got the idea for the song from a haiku of a Japanese poet Kobayashi Issa (1763 –1828). Original translated haiku goes like this:

“O snail
Climb Mount Fuji
But slowly, slowly!”

My better half helped me with lyrics and progression . Thank you for tuning in. smile

Climb Snail Climb

Things used:
Midi arrangement created in vArranger
Sound module Halion Sonic in BIAB
Real Tracks:
RealDrums = Reggae classic
Guitar 1154 Electric Rhythm reggae

Lyrics:

Little snail is waking up
grooming shell and cleaning snout
chewing on a crunchy leaf
sliding down a mossy rock
It embraces morning breeze
And delights in passing clouds.
Spreading its antennae wide
Catching radio signal.

Climb, snail, climb
Climb on the Fuji climb
But do it slowly.

Passing days in shade of ferns
Sharing news with friendly worms.
Watching busy fire ants,
Their construction never ends.
Wandering around the hood
On a single slimy foot.
Feeling happy, never blue
Winter is so distant

Climb, snail, climb
Climb on the Fuji climb
Climb, snail, climb
But do it slowly.

This is a dangerous world even for a snail
It can encounter sharp objects like broken glass or a nail
It could fall in the hands of a child
Get slammed by a heavy door
Or become a fancy dish of Escargot

Climb, snail, climb
Climb on the Fuji climb
Climb, snail, climb
But do it slowly.

Misha,
with the Real Tracks dominating the midi slides in well with out being obvious.
Cool song, delivery and story.
I was a little worried for the snail near fire ants but hey, if they were busy all is cool.

Cheers

Misha,

This is excellent.

The mix is solid. Good vocals. Good instrumentation. All crisp and clear and well balanced. The drums and guitar sound great.

Good music.

A solid write. It actually reminds me of some of the stuff in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton (and that well done). Perhaps there is a animal/insect Broadway show in your future...

smile

Good stuff.

Hi Misha,

If I had just listened to your song without reading the background story and the lyrics I would 100% agree with Rob, rayc and Floyd Jane. Great track and good mix!

However, reading the background story about the haiku poem and reading your lyrics before I listened to the track got me to expect a rhythmically much slower song simply because of the pictures I got in my head of that snail... so I was a little disappointed which of course is really unfair to you as it is just MY expectations interfering with my experience when listening to your song. But forget my babbling... it was actually a good song. smile

Rob, Thank you for listening and comment on Midi!

Ray, Thank you! Next action / horror tune: "Snail takes on anthill" smile

FJ, Thank you for kind comments! Please, no Animal & insect shows for me, I live in the woods, I get plenty of reality TV episodes here, Including bears, foxes, possums and other beasts that show up by my door from time to time smile

Will, thank you! I am sorry, I disappointed you a little. If you wish, I can slow it down by 50bpm smile This was a random and fun write for me, I did not bother to keep it traditional. But with your comment, I got an image in my head: I am sitting in the tea room with koto, dressed in kimono like a well mannered geisha, performing this tune sloooowwwly... with giant snail on my shoulder smile

Misha,

I very much enjoyed your Ode To A Snail! ( Why shouldn`t they have a little reggae on that loooong climb?)
All creatures great and small listen up... a RustySpoon treatment is coming your way- at least I hope so.
Excellent mix.

Excellent! And so unique as per usual.

My favorite part was the spoken word bit at the end, followed by that last chorus.

Track sounds great too, nicely done!

How cool!!

A rather unique perspective of life from a snail's world.

The mention of fire ants was unexpected but brought it home as we live in an world of them here in middle Georgia.

This is a tune for which it is equally enjoyable to read the lyric or listen to the tune or do both!

The band sounds very good...you made it all work very well.

Fun and as Peter said...evocative!

I always enjoy your lyrics. They are some of the most original lyrics with a unique perspective. They are poetry. This is my favorite of your songs!

Dave, Thank you!
I think I started last chorus a little too soon., realized that when it was already dark and did not want to wake family with my screaming smile

J&B, Thank you for listening! Seems several people noticed fire ants.. It rhymed well smile Maybe a better choice would have been: "Watching tireless ants, their construction never ends".

Ezekiel's Storm, Thank you for listening! My stuff is bit to shallow for real poetry, but for amateur hobbyist, I accept your rewarding comment smile

Torrey, Thank you! Would love to take a peak how you record your tunes smile

Jim, I believe it is more of a journey thing than reaching a destination smile Thank you for your kind feedback.

Misha.

Dear Misha,

that was a treat, cpuldn't say which 'ingredient' appealed to me most: the nice melody, the sweet lyrics, the way you sing the backing track... Very very niceall the way !!

All the best,

Stefan
