However IMO, (1) they are doing it the hard way and (2) if they did learn music theory they would have learned quicker and (3) they would even be better than they are today. If a huge number of people decided to be doctors without any training, a few would end up becoming good doctors, most would fail, and all would lose patients along the way. The exceptions do not disprove the rule.
