[Link no longer valid]

This is a new song I wrote this week and I'm still mixing. I will revisit it next week and probably upload a new mix then but decided to go ahead and present what I have. The lyrics explain it all! Due to the many syncopated parts in the song I used only the RealDrums from BIAB on this one (They are the best sounding ones available IMHO). I played all the other instruments. Thanks for checking it out

BIAB
Drums FunkHalfNoteSync
Drums FunkSanFran

Me
Vocals
Keys
Bass
Guitars
Percussion

very nice rocking rhythm built around the strong lyrical content. The melody is top quality once again. Great playing and vocals.

As usual Torey - you use some BIAB stuff as the basis for cracking performances of your own in a snappy song. reminds me of Joe Jackson between 2nd & third LPs.
The vocal reverb makes it sound like it's in another room from the rhythm section but you'll be reworking this so probably already have plans.
I look forward to the remix.

Nice one, Torrey!

Vocals are top notch.

Love your guitar work! And that little bit after the solo where you doubled the guitar part on the bass, at around 2:50, very cool indeed. Love the bass line, do you record it direct?

Mix sounds pretty close to me. Enjoyed the listen!

Great lyrics & tune...
I especially like your hook lines...

"Why do I do the things I don't want to do
Why do I hurt you when I say I love you
Why are the days I get it right so few
Tell me why oh why"

Nice writing...
I'd appreciate a PM reminder when you upload the finished song just in case...
I'd hate to miss the hearing where you take it.

Hi Torrey,

With every song you post, the consistency with which you produce works that have a rich, full and professional sound never wavers.

This is a terrific song and you've done a spectacular job playing all those instruments. There's no doubt about it, you really know your stuff when it comes to writing, arranging and presenting!

All the best,
Noel

Ha! I'm using what Noel said and totally agree

I don't like the drums as they are (probably just me)

super guitar and bass and vocals

Torrey,

You do Pop better than anyone else here. And this is an excellent example.

Original and catchy. Has all the qualities that Joe Jackson put into his best stuff. An interesting, unexpected melody, an interesting cadence to the lyrics/vocals, a driving, melodic bass line, lead-line-rhythm guitars that drive the melody deep into your ears. Very cool

Really enjoyed this.

Hi Torrey.
This reminds me of new wave from the eighties.
One slight pick is the cymbals where a touch overpowering in places but I know you are still mixing so not a real problem.
Great write my friend. Rob

Torrey,

There`s lots going on in this very catchy and funky song.
Yes, I would also have said you were channeling Joe Jackson with those changes and surprises in the melody... but no mistake, this is Torrey pop classic territory!
Your guitars and bass are so fine...I can`t hear much I`d change at all.
Very, very good.

Really, really, really great.

I was impressed with the intro especially. The listener has little chance to decide on the genre, it just opens up with a sensational delivery.

Lyrically excellent and musically outstanding.

Really nice work, Torrey smile It is perfectly catchy, and I love the vocals here. The effects almost remind me of Phil Collins a bit. As others have mentioned - this is a fine piece of songwriting. Very strong and pronounced delivery on all fronts. It is memorable, and hits seriously hard. Some awesome lyrics to boot.

Not a thing I'd change - you should be proud of this one. Thanks for sharing!

"Why do I do the things I don't want to do
Why do I hurt you when I say I love you
Why are the days I get it right so few
Tell me why oh why"

A nicely told lover's lament.

Your instrumental and vocals performances are so strong...broken record, yeah, but it's the truth.

The guitar is perfect for the song and, man, that bass line particularly doubling your guitar. Wow! Like Dave I'd like to know if it was a direct input?

And syncopation galore...how cool and put together amazing well.

You are very talented and we are all the better for it!

Torrey,
you are very diverse and talented musician. There are almost no two songs alike.
I enjoyed this. Very masterful use of syncopation and overall from lyrics to mix a solid A+.

Thank you,

Great song, Torrey. Nice melody and good lyrics, too. Your arrangement is also well done. I wish I could play my guitar as well as you play just one of those instruments. (I know, practice, practice, practice . . . .) No one else mentioned this, but I was sure I heard some horns at the end of the first three lines in both verses. Did you create that sound with your guitars?

Dear Torrey,

haven't heard any song of yours that isn't superb. This, again, is a great composition. And I'm always impressed by the fact that you play all the instruments yourself so flawlessly.

Fantastic vocals (as always). Regarding the mix: Although the bass line is awesome I think you could take it a little bit back. But that's, of course, a matter of taste...

All the best,

Stefan

Thanks for listening and commenting Ray! I don't have any reverb on the lead vocal, just delay. I do have it doubled on the heavy side so that may be part of the reason it's not out front more in the mix
I will be playing around with effects and mix this weekend when I get back to my studio . Thanks again, T

Thanks Dave for the encouraging and supportive comments! It's always appreciated! I am running the bass directly into my interface and then through GR5. It has some bass amp configurations and I use the one called "precise bottom" which seems to sound good with my bass and the style of tunes I do. T

It has a quality that cannot be faked, obviously, because each and every one of us is different. I'm referring to the quality of expression, seldom discussed, that enables an impression on the part of the listener of the personality, for lack of a better term, of the vocalist. Maybe it is soul. Whatever, the voice can convey so much about the artist. (Whether true or not, that's another story.) It is key to the success of a record, that dimension.
It goes with out saying, if a vocalist forces it or tries to be something he's not, it will fail.

Very cool tune Torrey. It grabbed me right from the start. The bass lines were so cool in the background. I really liked the vocal and effects you used. I think the mix is excellent right now. Guitar was super. Very cool tone...

Torrey,

Wow, so 80’s—brings me back to Fat Daddy’s, the local college bar where we shared pitchers of really bad beer and danced our butts off. This holds its own with all of those. Killer stuff!

Kind regards,

Deej

Thanks so much Ed! This song has not been understood in the proper context though and its my fault for not elaborating in the description. This one is a take on the Apostle Paul's words in Romans 7 where he pondered why he did the very things he didn't want to do. I can relate so much to that so much of the time! I can see how it can be interpreted as a human relationship song but I didn't intend for it to be that! It's just me trying to understand God's great love for us! Thanks again and I always highly value your comments! T

Hi Torrey

Song
Great groove particularly in verse section
Structure is pretty standard but with some imaginative twists and variations which keep the song interesting throughout
Mix / Production
nice mix
Quite an art. There’s a lot going on here and yet it never sounds cluttered.
Instrumentation
Some of the drum sounds could perhaps be revisited
Vocals
very nicely sung – lead and harmonies.
What I really liked
how you keep everything out the way of the melody in the verses
strong melodies in both sections
The rthm gtr (if I’m not wrong its the ‘True’ pattern – 2 and then pushed before 4 )
The pause and restart
What you might like to return to
not sure that the intro section or the gtr solo (2 30 – 2 45) add a great deal
Lead gtr a bit busy for my tastes here and there
The lyric could perhaps be improved
Overall impression
very strong composition and production
An example of just what is possible!

all the best,

Marc

Very nice, once again, Torrey. Love the lyrics, the melody, and the production in general.

It's giving me a bit of an old Todd Rundgren pop vibe, and that's a good thing.

Torrey,

Like this a ton—very 80’s pop. Kinda Howard Jones meets General Public, with a guest appearance by Joe Jackson. Very cool. Enjoyed this!

All the best,

Deej

I'm a sucker for major 7th chords and 70's sounding pop, so this was great to listen to.

floydjane mentioned that your melody has an interesting direction, and I agree - it makes the song really stand out.

Nice work on all the instruments (and vocals, of course).

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Me too David! Those major 7th chord seventies type songs always were a favorite of mine! I appreciate your kind words! T
