Just curious with everything that is being written. I would think all RT's should be on a 7200 rpm HD. At least. What say ye?

Moo, I doubt it. With a reduction of one inch of diameter, the smaller 2.5" drives don't need to spin as fast as the larger hard drives, and those that are 7200 RPM command a price premium. A 7200 RPM 2.5" drive would be equivalent to a 10,000 RPM 3.5" drive, and I don't know too many people who have those in their computers and are still able to do good audio work.
Also, if you are only transferring the data to a hard drive in your main computer, then the difference in transfer time will be negligible.

That's why I asked if it is a 5400 RPM hard drive....
Is it?

Thank you, Keebo. I appreciate the information.
As I decide on purchasing, I am methodically gathering pertinent information about the product and its delivery methodology. I have a 7200 RPM external HD and I would simply transfer the program there.
I have not received a free copy of the new 2010, so I am trying to discern info not explained in other threads.
As a potential customer, I do not think Peter and his company would refer to my curiosity as "tiresome".
I will leave it at that.

Are you being obtuse????
If it were a 7200 RPM HD, maybe I would stream directly from it. Now I know it is a 5400 RPM HD (which you either did not know, or simply wanted to avoid).
So I will stream it from my 7200 RPM HD instead.
What is decidedly moot, is your rude response to a legitimate question. I forgive you.

The 160GB drives are 5400 RPM. They are brand names, usually Toshiba or Hitachi.

Moo, I misread your post. I thought you were asking if it was a 7200 RPM drive. Sorry.

I read it that way too, Gary. I didn't read the post's title and your answer makes perfect sense if you only read the body text. I guess it caught me out because I'm not used to titles being the first sentence of the main text.

5400 rpm seems thoroughly sufficient -> zero coughing on a standard system here.

but if your 7200RPM drive is 3.5" it won't be any better then a 5400RPM 2.5" drive.

Hi Moo, there are some significant changes going on in the Harddrive production. Some years ago, when the HDD had less volume (GB), a 7200 rpm HD was THE only thing for audio recording. Things are changing now. There are less and less 7200 HDs with access times under 10ms. Thats because producers like Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital use the so called "Acoustic Mode" for their drives. With the Acoustic Mode on the Write- and Readheads don`t speed up that fast, so they produce less noise. Unfortunately with these producers you can`t turn the Acoustic mode off - it`s on by default (via firmware).
Also the data density is permanently raised by producers, to get more than 1 Terrabyte on the discs. This makes it hard to position the heads of the Disc in a precise way. That`s why the trend goes to 5400rpm - 5900rpm also with the 3.5 HDDs. Because with lesser rotation speed the reading and writing is more precise / accurate. The access times are then usually between 11ms and 15ms.
Western Digital has a Drive out (WD20-EADS) with 2GB, that has only 9ms access time, due to a special firmware algorythm, and uses the more accurate 5400rpm discs.
Also 5400 discs are lower in noise and produce less heat. If you use your drive via USB then USB is a bottleneck for speed (acces time) anyway.
Until today I only use 7200rpm drives. But when the new 5400 drives with fast acces times are on the market I`ll buy these. They are simply more accurate. And in a recording session I want to rely on my disc. But don`t buy the cheap ones, read the specifiacations.
HTH, Sandra

Unless you are talking the PGMusic Audiophile version, which uses full .wav format RealtRacks and RealDrums, you are talking about .wma compressed files anyway. The Audiophile version does ship on a 7200rpm drive.
Streaming from USB is not an issue, besides that, there really is no realtime streaming from the drive, RealTracks are created and run from the Temp area of your C drive.

Interesting take on this, Sandra. Looks like I need to do some reading on the subject. Only one thing appears certain. Whatever we seem to know changes rapidly in the face of technology. Thanks for your considered response.
