Similar to you, a few years ago I discovered that if a 'number of beats per bar' setting was reduced for one bar and then the following bar was increased back to normal, it was necessary to occupy the non-playing section of the reduced-count bar with a non-playing chord or else the playback was incorrect. This has now been fixed since BIAB 2018 (if I recall correctly).

The above said, when I tried with shots by going from 4/4 to 3/4 and back to 4/4 (as you describe), it worked exactly as you say (i.e. problematic playback). If shots are not involved, the bars play fine without that non-playing chord. I have BIAB 2019 (beta build 615).

I will report this to the programmers and reference this thread so that they can read about your problem and its solution.
