This is a subject that must be handled with care, always reminding ourselves that what one company or person does is not necessarily how another, in the same business, proceeds. That said, I am hopeful to receive, if any, very generalized observations or impressions, nothing that might be taken as detrimental or anecdotal. OK, so here it is: What's the story on music promoters on Soundcloud? Has anyone followed through?
P.S. Mods: If you'd rather we not, simply pull this down. I'll understand, perfectly.

99.9% scammers blowing sunshine up your butt. (I cleaned that up!)
I have had dozens of people follow and tell me how much they love my stuff but the play count does not increase, so they are not even listening. Just spamming me.

What's the story on music promoters on Soundcloud? Has anyone followed through? I have not because I don't think any of them are truly legit in this context. I'm old....so, in life 'I believe half of what I see and none of what I hear'. I'd go with e1261's take....I perceive them to be mainly scams for what ever reason. I would change the percentage to 99.9 9% percent though. But....I have been wrong in the past. Carry on.....

I have no stage experience and am only beginning to write my own songs.
Whenever I post anything in SoundCloud I am contacted by several of these folks. I consider the fact they are only hoping to make money on me which, probably, includes a substantial donation by me.
Sadly, they will take someone who wants to live the dream for their money.

Oddly we get very, very few considering how many songs we’ve uploaded and how long we’ve been on SC. When the rare one appears I never bestitate to block them and report as spam. A quick process.
Our albums and singles are on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Pandora and more. If interested search on Janice Merritt. Thanks! Our Videos are here on our website.

Is what you are posting mainstream market relevant anymore? You haven't played in what, decades? Even I get those scammers and my stuff isn't going to sell to anybody! Biggest thing is to watch your play count. If your play count was 37 yesterday, and you hear from one of those parasites and your play count is still 37, they didn't even listen. They just "scam netted" you. And sadly I am sure somebody is dumb enough to fall for it. It costs them nothing to cut and paste their scam to every account on Soundcloud. Any fool that bites and sends them "promo money" is pure profit. What would be fun to do as an experiment would be to create a bogus Soundcloud with a burner email address and put up the worst piece of garbage you can write, like a Bluegrass punk polka tune, and see if you get "That was the BEST thing I ever heard!!!!" type emails. In fact I might do that myself. Nobody writes bad songs better than I do!!!

<< "Bluegrass punk polka tune" >> That's called a micro niche market and if 1000 hard core "Bluegrass punk polka" fans purchase your "Bluegrass punk polka" specific genre CD over the course of a year at $12 per copy, that's $12,000 yearly income. You can double that by enticing them to also buy a coffee mug or T-shirt for $12 more. (or find another 1,000 "Bluegrass punk polka" groupies.) There's a young lady, married and a stay at home mother of five according to her background story, that realized she would never achieve fame and riches from her lifelong passion of singing and writing songs. Over time she developed a step by step program from the above theory realizing that $24,000 was a comfortable income that exceeded many entry level 9-5 positions. She only had to write, record, and print 1,000 copies once the sell them from her 24/7-365 day website. An excellent return on a one time investment. Repeat next year and likely she retains some fans from the previous year so the 2nd and subsequent years, not even a 1,000 folks have to find and purchase her music and accessories for her to maintain a steady income. Ultimately, she concluded her step by step plan was viable and repeatable. She created a step by step course and sells it for a nice sum on Facebook.

We currently have 22 songs licensed via Songtradr to Mood Media -- a company with 500,000 customers in 142 countries. They pay a LOT more than songs on all the streaming platforms. We obviously aren't producing songs that are commensurate with the top 100 but apparently there are a number of industry folks that like them enough to pay us for them. Having said that...it's all about fun. We have yet to produce a single song for any particular demand or market. We put them on Soundcloud and Songtradr and if they are ultimately licensed that offers, in addition to the payments, validation that somebody other than family and friends appreciate our efforts. We also have were offered and signed a three year contract with Crucial Music. They are currently pitching one of our tunes to ABC. Crucial Music is a big player in the industry and have a small select catalog of artists and LONG track record of high end placements. Unlike Songradr they put you through an extensive review process before being offered a contract - one that is offered to a small number of submitting artists. Regarding Soundcloud we have over 30,000 plays and have been placed on some nice often visited playlists around the world. And we have received requests to use our songs for various projects...although not to "promote" them . Heck not gigging has likely helped as when we quit our band in 2003 we were still playing bluegrass. BiaB has let us expand into genres we long listened to but never realized we would have a band to work with I mention this not to appear as a braggadocio but in response to the suggestion that not gigging in x number of years might prohibit entry into the main stream market of song placements. Our Americana based music has become more and more of a player in the mainstream market. It's a BIG tent and it's fun to be part of it. Pardon the ole fart ramble! J&B

The comment was a suggestion as to why the spammers leave you alone. "Is what you are posting mainstream market relevant anymore?" Well that suggested to me that you were wondering about any viability in the mainstream market. But now having thought about the SC thing I'm wondering if the spammers' algorithms search on hashtags. Meaning if I listed a bluegrass or blues song and used "EDM" as the hashtag would I get spammed? J&B

Well that suggested to me that you were wondering about any viability in the mainstream market.
Where I live, bluegrass barely exists and was never a power category. To my eats it kind of all sounds the same. Finger picking, same tempo, same modal harmony..... So based on my music history, I just wondered if it's your genre that keeps you spam free. (Other than Andy Leftwich, I can't name even one bluegrass player that isn't dead like Flatt and Scruggs.) Every time I post I get 2 people suddenly want to follow me despite the fact that they have not listened to anything I have posted. The include a comment about how much they "love this song" that never changes. So it's an obvious cut and paste. I immediately block them. As I have often said, I write for cathartic purposes, not for public adoration, unlike those insecure types here who constantly bump their songs to the top of the page pandering for more attention. Like, don't like, I truly don't care. Nobody mnatters that much to me that I care what they think. All that matters to me is whether I like it. So when someone spams me, I KNOW they are spammers because my stuff is not all that great that it would attract viable public attention. I have written exactly ONE song that I think has any commercial value, and if I could ever get a female to come and sing it (3 have promised, none have shown up) I would try to take it somewhere. No need to be so defensive.

Everything I ever put on soundcloud is public. I never gave one moments thought about money. I get what I consider bogus offers from time to time. Today someone posted "I like the song, we should work together" I said "sure why not" Best thing that could happen to me would be for some super star to steal on of my copyrighted songs.lol
I don't have any fear of scammers. I am not sending anyone money for anything. Falling into some scammer's trap is beyond my comprehension. Along with making a decision of who to vote for based on some facebook post/add.
There is value in everyone's music. Anyone can get their music in places that it can be sold. It may or may not ever generate a dime. The last serious album I was involved in cost 30K to make and returned 10K...lol Mercury records invested over five million dollars in Achy Breaky Heart. Most likely the only reason anyone has ever known the name Billy Ray Cyrus.Got five million??
In general everyone is competing with the best, most well known musicians, but not always. Sometimes those people are too expensive, not approachable or not willing to sell their songs.. That gives people with lesser talents a chance to sell their stuff.
I am glad to listen to anyone when I have the time. I don't care what their motivation for posting was. We should all be less critical and more accepting of the people around us.
Cheers,
Billy
“Amazing! I’ll be working with Jaco Pastorius, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, and Buddy Rich, and you’re telling me it’s not that great of a gig? “Well…” Saint Peter, hesitated, “God’s got this girlfriend who thinks she can sing…”
