DOS attacks can be rough for hosting providers.

Getting a server to respond while under attack can be an effort in futility.

Sometimes the server just has to be taken down/offline in order to be recovered.

Sorry you had to experience that.
Not much a public host/provider could do to prevent a random attack, just try to mitigate & recover.
