3 Save as substyle. eg: e/f
4. Select substyle of choice at measure.
5 Biab doesn't acknowledge selection.

I couldn't follow those steps. Presumably for Step 2 you mean pick any letter for a SubSytle. You can't select a STYLE directly from those menu items, or did you mean select the Define c/d option for step 2?
