If the only factor is a cheap DAW, then Audacity and Reaper are good choices.

But if you are trying to show how anyone can make a song, there are a lot of questions that need answering, such as:

  • Do you plan to explain how to use a DAW to newbies, or point them to on-line tutorials?
  • What level musical skills do you assume your users have?
  • Will they be recording their own instruments, MIDI, or loops?
  • Should the DAW come with instruments or loops? Audacity and Reaper don't.

How far you want to get into the weeds with your viewers will determine which DAW fits your needs best.
