Hi everyone, Floyd Jane had suggested that we should have a contest to figure out how best to mix this Rock song. Here is a link to the raw stems/tracks. Awesome, Billy!
So that everyone knows... I've downloaded these... it is simple to do - the Download button in Dropbox (upper right hand corner) will download the entire folder as a zip file - 230M. It will extract to 488M (they are WAVs).
The download is really fast (for me anyway) - less than a minute.
The stems all line up perfectly in the DAW (Studio One, for me).
So, quick and easy to get started...
I also check replacing the drums. You can bring up BIAB, set a tempo of 120 and about 105 measures - and any generated RealDrums line up perfectly...

I assume that everyone would know but just in case...
The song is written in four bar segments. Starting at measure three.
|E|E|E|E (this is a E power chord riff)
|D|A|E|E
|D|A|E|E
As this repeats, you can also see this as 12 bar segments.
The song is 103 measures long. There is a four measure fade at the end.
If the guitar solo will not fit over your version I can replay the solo or you can play the solo yourself as you like.
I also put this together in Studio One 4.
Floyd....you should not have let me know you are using Studio One!!! I will be bugging you with questions!!! Ha Ha lol

First of all I just had a listen, good song!
I’ll give it a go if I can find the time, I’ve never tried to mix someone’s else’s song before so it will be good experience, and also fun.

I'm looking forward to hearing different interpretations! Y'all feel free to knock this one... My mix of Planobilly's Cyber Space I swapped out the drums for RockHardEven8. I dropped a Studio One preset on that - called S1 Drumgroup - the one I use all the time - includes a multiband compressor and EQ. The bass got another preset "Funk Bass" (compression and EQ) that gives some definition. I bumped up the high EQ (a shelf) on the lead guitars to give them "some sheen". The vocals (and harmonies) are cool. That boy can sing! I added the usual compression, EQ, delay and reverb (a bit more delay and reverb than I usually use). The harmonies all got a Nectar preset (Rock Classic (group)). The rest was just panning (guitars and harmonies) and setting volumes of tracks relative to the others... mostly to bring out the vocals and the drums and the bass (I don't think I got the bass "fat" enough, though). These type songs (Hard Rock with screamin' guitars and vocals) ARE harder to mix (I think) - especially for those of us who don't do them (usually). My ears are shot for a while...

Great version! I like what you did. A combination of subtle moves can make a big difference. Plus I like the new drums.

Hey Floyd, Great job!!
I had to leave for a while today.
I find I can not listen to this style of music with a headset on for too very long. It is a lot of work to mix this sort of thing. Even worse on stage live!!lol
I have to redo the lead guitar line at the end of the song and get it off the vocal.There are two guitar notes that have to come out at 3:08.
I am going to try to duplicate what you did in Studio One. I own that DAW and Sonar Platinum.
A question about drums in general. I assume there is no way in BB to have drum kit pieces split out on separate tracks. What if you wanted to put some reverb on just the snare or EQ to change the tone?
Also, I know how to multi track drums in Sonar but I have not quite got a handle on the same process in Studio One.I know how to do it but find it odd not to see a track.
I am going to try out the S1 Drumgroup.

Does it have to be using PG products - because I have fallen in love with ToonTrack EZDrummer, and I would be going that way for drums if I had my choice.

Nothing wrong with what is there now, just want to have some fun EDIT: Actually after thinking about it for a minute it's better if I didn't, not a true comparison to see how different people mix if the guitar on mine is different.

My opinion - since this is really Billy's show - is that using EZ Drummer would be fair game, since Billy stated early on that he was not satisfied with the drums (that is why I replaced them). And... it is a mix, so not really a PG-Music-product thing (most the tracks ARE from BIAB). I, for one, would love to hear you do a mix... Guys,
Please feel free to use what ever you like. I have EZDrummer and addictive drums and session drummer and one or two others. I would actually prefer to use one of those because of the greater amount of control. I think the drum line from BB that Floyd used is is OK. The only issue is there is no way to control each separate piece.
If anyone wants to create another version by playing a new guitar line, that would be really fine with me. Perhaps if you do that you should make two versions. One we can compare for mixing purposes and a all together different one. That would not be the first time someone here has reworked one of my songs.
I don't like the drums I used. I had in mind to get the drummer in the band to play something in his studio at some point in the future. I am not in love with the bass line. If we only change the bass line and drums, the song will remain more or less the same. It will still be a screaming rock vocal/guitar song.
As far as the lead guitar line goes, most likely every time I play this song I will play a somewhat different lead.
All of us here like PG products or we would not be here to begin with. I think all would agree there is no good reason to use them exclusively. I did not write down what I used out of BB. But for sure the bass track, one rhythm track. I think all the other guitar I played. I used Addictive drums. The vocals were done by Dan,a friend of mine in London, England. Future vocals will be done here live in my studio using the guys in the band.
I have to go to the the Dr. Be back in a bit. Don't ever get old..lollol

Looking through the net I found a vid that demonstrated how to add vocal tracks. He was using BIAB 2018 which had some files named Vocal Ooh,s and Vocal Aah,s. I am using BIAB 2019 and I cannot find these files anywhere. Any suggestions

Well, that was fun! I normally spend three days or more on a mix, here is the result of three hours including building the drum track: My mix of Cyber Space I used EZDrummer2 to build the drum track, and ran it through CLA Drums Bass is processed with CLA Bass Rhythm guitars are processed with CLA Unplugged and CLA Guitars, and I did some panning Lead guitar is processed with Neutron2 Main vocal is going through CLA Vocals and a de-esser. Background vocals are panned and routed to a separate bus that has it's own instance of CLA Vocals (different settings) Mastered with Ozone8. I didn't listen to floyds until I finished mine, didn't want to be influenced by what he did. His is much different! Anyway, I had fun doing this, great idea!

Great mix!! I like the drums the best of any yet. We will see what Rockstar has to say if he decides to jump in with EZDrummer.
After listening to "What Could I Do" and "The Blue Line" it is obvious you are a really good guitar player. I have not had the time to listen to all your stuff yet. At first glance, I think we must like many of the same things musically...B3, Gary Moore!!
Now I am really wanting to hear a lead guitar part by you!!!
This has been an eye opener for me. I hope I can figure out how to implement some of the sonic ideas I am hearing.

EDIT: After listening to this a few times it is obvious that there are to many imperfections in my lead guitar line to be "fixed". I will play it again and perhaps others will play a line of their own.

The files you are looking for are real tracks under vocal. You can select the style button filter string "vocal" category "show all" and this will take you there.

Here is how this idea got started. 1. I listen to John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom Boom" many times in my life. 2. I listen to ZZ Top La Grange a zillion times. I assume Billy got the idea from John Lee Hooker 3. I wanted a heavily over driven riff that was something like that but did not copy John Lee or Billy Here are the three riffs. So aside from the issues of mixing, a lot of other thinking went into creating this song so far. I have no idea yet if it is a keeper or not. First of all, it is not finished. To a great extent it is not me who will decide if it will get played in the future. My job is to write songs. Others have to decide if they are any good or not. Magic sauce: 1-all drum parts = Waves CLA drums 2-Bass = Studio One Pro compression 3-all guitars = Waves REDD17 4-all vocals = Waves JJP Vocals, Waves Vocal Rider, a touch of Breverb Master buss = Studio One Pro EQ and compression.

Hi Mario,
Cool mix. This changed the song from a screaming in your face Rock tune to something a little more musical and subdued.
It is pretty amazing how different the same set of stems can turn out as a function of mixing.
Thanks for doing this. I for one am getting a education in what is possible.
Given the fact that there are many imperfections in the original stems,I think if a thousand separate people listen to each mix it would be hard to predict which one would be liked the best.Even if the obvious imperfections were fixed, it would be difficult to guess what non musicians would think.
It appears that Studio One is liked by more than a few people.

What a really great idea!!!
Thanks heaps for making the stems available and allowing us all to have a play with your creation. This type of rock music is one of my weakest links. That said, I'll still have a go and see where it takes me.

You got that bass just where it needed to be - nice. The drums are super (I thought they could use more reverb for the style). And you put the lead guitar in just the right place. Well done. I'd have you mix my Hard Rock stuff anytime...

Billy Actually one of the tests does use the 'Canopy Fracturing System' and the other one is to demonstrate how the seat punches through the canopy without the canopy fracturing system engaged. This is for a vehicle that does not blow off the canopy. We are not privy to details on the vehicle itself. If we were blowing the canape, I think we would be cooling off an appetizer! -Scott

Well...fortunately I have never had to test an ejection seat. Plenty of been on fire,engine out and landing gear will not go down sort of issues. I guess it would be much better to eat a canape than blast through a canopy...lol
Getting to old to fly was a real downer. I can't blame old age on the spelling issue. Of the things I have lost I miss my mind the most!!

The drums and bass are nicely prominent. A few part of the vocal could use a slight volume bump (the opening, mostly). Well done.

I agree with what Floyd said. Also, thank you for taking the time to do this.
The volume at the start of vocal when it was recorded was inconsistent. I think it is not so easy to record "screaming" vocals to begin with. All these issues with the original recording present a lot of challenges for someone trying to "fix and mix" a track.
iZotope Nectar appears to be a go to piece of software for many people.
Everyone who has mixed this has contributed some useful ideas.

Thanks Floyd's. Yeah I hear what you mean about the vocals at the beginning. Nothing a little volume automation can't fix. Like I said, it was a fast mix... after a long weekend of gigging. I was getting a little tired by the end.

Billy iZotope's Nectar 3 is a great tool for vocals. I used the vocal assistant on the lead vocal and a preset for wide backing vocals on the harmonies. Then I also used it on the Vocal Bus to unmask the vocals. Since I've started using Nectar 3 it's made processing vocals a lot easier.

OK... so after listening to the mix I did last night I wasn't happy. More specifically I wasn't happy with the drums and as discussed earlier the vocals needed a little help. I changed out the drums using Groove Agent and added a convolution reverb to them. Then I added compression and drew in automation on the lead vocal. After that I decided I wasn't happy with the lead guitar. So I went back and added compression and a little distortion to it. Here is the Cyberspace New Mix

Wow!! I never imagined so many people would have the time and interest to mix this.
I am in the middle of some pretty serious health issues that require me going to the Dr. almost every other day.
I have not had the time to really critically listen to Samuel and F.M.M. last mix. I will try to get to it tonight.
F.M.M...I only listen once so far but your mix sounds like what I think this would sound like with the band playing it live. Only we would have three different vocalist to work with. This is a great mix for the band to listen too. Thank you ever so much for taking the time to do this.
Don't worry Janice, we will let Bud off the hook....lollol I know you keep him busy working full time!!

Hi Folks, Saw this thread earlier today and thought I would also give it a go as I enjoy the production side of music, as well as making music - both of which I am looking to do more of. Wow! What a cool concept. Great idea for a thread! Also, I wanted to mention how amazing it is to hear the same song mixed by different people. If this doesn't show what happens beyond the musicians; I don't know what does. Same song; different sounds. I do have a question that I hope doesn't disrupt the spirit of the thread. For me, a good portion of mixing comes comes down to arrangement/song structure. Is that out of bounds to change? Keeping the same stems; just changing the arrangement of them. Of course, it does sound as though people are ok with drums being changed. I'm not saying I want to; but sort of considered it. Again, I get the thread is about mixing; and if this would ruin that in ANY way; it's a no go by me...and I'm fine with that. Billy; great job on offering up your song to have some fun with. I'm loving what I'm hearing and you started it. Too cool in my book! We could really use more of this kind of thing, in my opinion.

I saw the neurologist today. Not really good news. High probability of Parkinson.
So....I am a bit distracted.
I have no issue with anyone changing any part of this song. That is I guess what could come next. We figure out how best to mix what exist. We then can make a decision that there may be better arrangements.
To make this into a team effort we would have to agree what the general outcome should be. What kind of song is this? Screaming rock with screaming guitar? More of a metal vibe? Is it ever going to be played live with a three or four piece band? Does the music fit the message?
There are obvious issues with my tracks other than mixing.
1. My drums were unacceptable.
2. The bass line was just "OK"
3. The lead guitar line had too many notes out of time and a few "wrong" notes.
4. There is nothing really wrong with the vocal. Yes there are some pitch issues and places where the phrasing could be better. It is a rock vocal, not "Bridge Over Troubled Water" Everyone has Melodyne/Autotune so small issues with the vocal can be fixed.
5. I am OK with the lyrics but that is just my subjective opinion.
6. The song is too "mechanical", everything repeats every 12 measures. There should be some kind of bridge to address that issue.
If anyone thinks they can sing a better vocal, play a better guitar lead or redo any track, I think that would be fantastic. Post you tracks and I and most likely others will mix them. This has already turned into a BB forum song, a wide area collaboration, which I a super happy to be a small part of.

Everything you listed is actually fine with me. It adds to the "listen what so and so did; verses the other so and so." Don't get down on your tracks. I know I like them! Btw, was that you on vocals? If so, you really have a great voice. I like your tone A LOT! No, thank you! You started the whole idea and were very generous in what you have provided. I think there is a lot of appreciation for what you have done. Many here are listening and just not participating. This is great content for the forum. It just took a spark from you...and I guess fanning that fire. So...Thank you!

Thanks for the kind words. The health issues are just "stuff". Not to worry. Life is not dangerous it is terminal, no one ever made it out alive...lol
I am a big fan of collaboration in any form. It is what I like about playing in a band. It is a team effort.
I have enjoyed listening to the various mix versions to date. It has given me some education in what is possible that I may not have considered before.
The vocal was done by Dan, a friend of mine in London, England. The vocal would have been slightly different if he was here in Miami at my house. He only had a very general idea of what I was looking for. Another vocal will be done here locally when the guys in the band have the time. I have no ability to sing that style of music. Backing, perhaps but not lead.
This song started out as just messing around with the new 2019 BB. It has taken on a life of it's own. It continues to be a fun little project. Who knows where and how this may get played.
There are songs that friends of mine have written that I play. They are not always aware that I or anyone else is playing their songs. Some of them are not even still alive. I might say "this one is for Joe" no one at the gig knows who Joe was....but I do.
Songs very often get passed around in a very strange manner. Someone sent me a email from China, Mongolia to be exact telling me how much they liked one of my blues tunes. How does someone in China find a completely unknown person like me. Well, yes it happened because of soundcloud, but what are the chances of that.
It is getting late here, in more ways than one....

Thank you Billy for allowing us to share in your creative process. this was my Saturday evening project this weekend. I used all of your original files. I approached it by trying to make each section sound a little different. The intro i stripped down to feature the beautiful lead guitar. ...and i featured that drum fill track each time that it comes in. I chose to do a fade in and fade out at the beginning and end of the song. ...and to build up instead of starting with all of the instruments. Mutes and automation were used to bring in and out the various parts as needed. I played live tambourine at the ending. The drum loop at the start and end i programmed in Cubase's Groove Agent SE. Also, used Groove Agent to play the added snare hit and ride cymbal. T-Racks classic compressor was used on most tracks. All other effects are Cubase stock effects. ( Reverbs, delays,chorus, flanger, EQ, chopper, step filter, saturation ). here's the link: Cyberspace-Robsmix thanks again for sharing this! peace! -rob

What a very cool mix you have come up with!! Without any doubt this is the most unusual mix to date! I really like the concept. Cool stuff!!

Thanks for posting the link. I took a look but don't quite have it figured out yet. Who decides which mix is the winner?
I have at least a hundred songs with all the stems. I could send raw stems . It looks like many people have send stems that have been pre mixed which makes it hard if not impossible to remix.
I will try to take a bit of time to understand the site better.

I would like to kill two birds with one stone. I want to take your lyrics, and re-imagine the song in the style of one of two artists whose production aesthetic has been discussed at length here on the forums over the past year.
Take your choice - would you like this song re-imagined in the style of:
1. Luke Combs
2. Ed Sheeran

Which would you prefer?
Whichever you would prefer, I want to take it on as a challenge. It might take me awhile to do it, as I am again traveling for work about 50% of the time over the next month.
Note: I currently use no PG Music products, so I won't be able to provide style information. Neither of these artists have anything particularly difficult to play as far as I can tell (slide guitar will be the most challenging thing I think in reproducing these)
Drums will be EZ Drummer.
Everything else will be me, except if I use some loops for drums - Luke Combs producers use quite a few electronic and rock sounds in his drums. Hurricane is one such example.
Why do I suggest this?
Your lyrics are dealing with very current topics. The style used in your demo, though at one time was modern and you executed quite well for that sound, sounds to my ear, to be about 30 years old. 80's era rock. The two things; lyrics and the sound; seem out-of-sync to me. I think you did a great job on your song, but I want to see the possibilities about doing a cover of it AND demonstrate production and arrangement of what I hear in one of those two artists.
I probably won't use the same chord structure exactly, but I'll try to stay true to it as much as possible and the melodic range, so you can replace my scratch vocals with your more powerful vocals.
I may call upon the assistance of some PGers here for some instrumentation. For example, I don't currently have access to mandolin and I only can pull off those 2 finger chords when I've played in the past or little deedle-ee-dee melody bits.
How does this sound to you?

Mat or I neither one can sing modern country and certainly can not sing like Ed Sheeran.
Feel free to re-imagine as you like.
The musical idea came from John Lee Hooker 1962 Boom Boom Boom and ZZ Top La Grange 1973.
If I were to do another style it would be with a young female singer and one acoustic guitar in a minor key and put the controversial lyrics back in the song and not post it on this forum.
There are a lot of phone songs...Luke Bryan - Light It Up comes to mind.
I assume anything is possible, but these were written as rock lyrics.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
