Long Way From Gainesville
© 2019 Kenny Leverett

In a setting straight out of nowhere
A towheaded boy with a dream
Wanting to be like Elvis
Buys some Black Diamond strings

They said he’d never amount to nothing
Not enough meat on the bone
Sitting all day in his bedroom
Trying to write a song

It’s a long way from Gainesville
Following a yellow brick road
Of all the memories I’m keeping the good ones
Just so you know

Put my thoughts down on paper
And then call it a day
Pick up my guitar tomorrow
And play

Here in the city of angels
There’s so many broken hearts
Lost souls are out there
Sleepwalking down the boulevard

It’s a long way from Gainesville
Following a yellow brick road
Of all the memories I’m keeping the good ones
Just so you know

Put my thoughts down on paper
And then call it a day
Pick up my guitar tomorrow
And play

And in all of your journeys
However far you go
You’ll live here in my heart
Just so you know

Kenny Leverett, YOU are KILLIN' it!!

ANOTHER INCREDIBLY good song!

An outstanding write. Amazingly good.

A terrific arrangement. Excellent BAND.

Top-notch vocal. Oozes sincerity.

Maybe your best mix ever.

I was expecting this to have a Petty sound (something I've always wanted to try to emulate with BIAB), but it's "all Kenny"...

One more HUGE WOW!

Yep... very good write there.

I agree with the things Floyd mentioned.

It had a hint of Tom Waits on the vox... kinda almost raspy but real.
The music had a Springsteen groove from his early days when he was smokin good. He used piano like you do in this song.

Yep, like this a lot.

Wow - what a tune! Love the progressions, and it is perfectly catchy. As Floyd said, the arrangement on this is top notch and it sounds extremely professional. I wouldn't bat an eyelash if I heard this on the radio.

You should be proud of this one - thanks for sharing smile

Kenny,
Well composed ballad!
Good balance of instrumentals and vocals.
I liked this part:
"Here in the city of angels
There’s so many broken hearts
Lost souls are out there
Sleepwalking down the boulevard"

The vocal "ooohs" was a nice addition, but if you are up for suggestions, I think they end a little sharp, maybe small reverb tail would smooth endings?

Thank you for sharing!
Misha.

Very nice melody and chording. "Of all the memories I’m keeping the good ones" - touching lyrics as well. Well mixed full powerful arrangement, I especially like the piano, maybe some section would have worked also with just piano backing.

Apart from being a cool story song it's a classic example of working with family rhyming - plosives, fricatives and nasals.
Perfect rhymes aren't always perfect for a song - this makes that case really well.

Kenny, Great write and of course the vocals deliver the goods. I loved the chord progression and the piano. Now whenever I pass by Gainesville I will think of this super song. It don’t get much better than this, Tom

Good write, kind of reminds me of a song the Eagles would write. Lots of musicians can relate to this story as so many try, but it's not in the cards. Love the melancholy but the appreciation and recognition.

This is really good Kenny. I agree with Floyd. You are killin' it.

Inspires me a lot man. Makes me want to play. I can't think of a higher compliment than that.

I know you have been compared to a lot of people but it sounds like Kenny to me. You are an artist in your own right, dude.

Great job.

Well thank you so much,

I already offered to buy the first round, I may have to make it a case now.

After TP died I wanted to write a tribute to say that he and his songwriting

meant so much to me for so many years, I remember learning the chords and parts

to Here Comes My Girl many years ago and it seems like he's been there for most of my life.

Of course he's still there, so when I was repairing something minor in the yard it comes to me

(seems like it always happens when you're not trying) the story of the towheaded boy from

Gainesville, not a likely rock n roll hero. There's little nods to the verses in Free Falling.

I'm humbled and so appreciative of your kind words, you're one of my favorite writers.

Thanks man

Thanks Herb, I really appreciate it.

Everyone hears something different which is great,

You hear a hint of Tom Waits, it makes me chuckle, I'm trying my best

to sing softly and not have that gravel in this song that I usually have.

I'm glad that you noticed the piano and compare to another of my heroes

I was afraid that I'd buried it in the mix, I bring it up after the last chorus.

Deryk,

Thank you so much for the listen and kind words.

as they say...from your lips to God's ears,

get on the radio and make me some of those half-pennies, it adds up!

I'm not trying to be flippant, I appreciate your great compliment.
