I have been trying to record a guitar solo today. I am running direct into my Scarlett 2i2. No matter how I do it or what pedals I run it through, I get a faint, high-pitched noise ocasionally, like feedback. I even tried running it with no pedal, same thing. I've never had this problem before. It's enough to make the track unusable.
Anybody ever have this happen?

I got that when I reinstalled some plugins and forgot to re-activate them. It was the protection noise and it occurred at set intervals.
Other than that do you have any other equipment running at the same time which could be causing it?

The only time that I have ever gotten a high pitched noise during a recording is when a live cell phone was near. Turning off the cell phone or moving it away from the instrument that I am recording stopped the noise.
When you are at the checkout line and they ask if you found everything say "Why, are you hiding stuff?"

Is your guitar cable running across any other cables or near the computer or computer display? What if you unplug your guitar but leave the cable connected to the audio interface with the interface pre-amp gain level up all the way? What if you have the guitar cable cable disconnected but the pre-amp gain all the way up? The first thing to discover is to narrow down the noise source to guitar, cabling or interface.

Jim,
The guitar cable is close to my computer and interface. My interface cable isn't very long so everything is close. I can try to separate them.
Your suggestions on tracking down the noise are helpful. I will try both.
Funny thing is that I only hear it with certain notes. But maybe it's there all the time and my old ears just don't hear it.

An update. Changed this chord, that chord, moved the phone away, changed guitars. Same problem happening with the same notes. Only things I can't change are the USB cable to the computer and the computer because I don't have spares.
It must be something I am doing when I play. Maybe I am triggering a resonant frequency or my hand is causing a very high harmonic. This happens on my D string.
I am going to go to a friend's house and try it there. If I don't get the problem, it's my equipment. If I do, it's me.

Loose hardware on the guitar?
I had that problem once and it caused weird harmonics.
Play the notes that give you problems and then touch various parts of your guitar. If the problem stops there is your loose hardware problem.

A friend of mine with a lot of experience guesses digital distortion. Says to bring the level way down and then do a gain change.
We'll see.

If it’s just the d string, try damping the strings behind the nut in some way. Tie a section of rubber band around the D string behind the nut

Thanks, I will try that.
I did the part on another guitar through my Roland VS-880. I kept the level low and then applied their Blues Driver effect. Worked great.
I think it has something to do with fret wear on the first guitar I tried, so your idea may work.

2b If that helped as much as it did, move the rubber band to different spots on the string between the nut and the tuning machine and try different thicknesses of rubber band. You should be able to find a combo that kills it completely. I had a Strat with that issue.
