That's the thing I admire about you. You write consistently good songs. Good lyrics, good music, good vox.... what am I missing?

Like J&B, I hear the faint influences of the E-Street gang in this. Yep... solid top 40 radio grist styled on the late 70's, early 80's of country music.

Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of here.

I really like how you utilized the RealTracks on this song! Really nicely done. This song had really great energy in general!

Fantastic song-writing and delivery. The band is full-on energy. And it's all powerfully mixed and just makes me feel good.

It's already been quoted but, man, are those great lines...of many.

Janice commented a minute into the listen that the song has an E Street Band anthemic feel to it.

We've said it before but you can do more with two verses and a chorus than most can create with another verse and a bridge thrown in smile

We struggle for more to say as we read all the comments before sitting down to write this...your forum fans didn't leave much wiggle room re further accolades.

Suffice it to say that the write is superb, your vocals are superb and the production is room filling. We've listened on the monitors and on the big system and it genuinely sounds like a product out of a big studio.

You the man mr jane!

J&B

Ah, shucks. Y'all say the nicest things... I did not intend this to have that E Street Band sound, but once it was put together, I had a similar thought. The combination of driving piano and big drums was a defining part of the Born To Run album - and as a whole, I've probably heard that record more than any other (or any 5 put together). I'm glad it "worked" for you. Thanks for the great review!

I'm not sure we all recognize your vocal enough. You are very close to what some of the "new" country guys, that sound a bit "throw back", sound like. There's something Randy Houser-ish about your vocals...and he always liked Ronnie Dunn. I love that style of vocal. Big, strong, and non-apologetic; without sounding like your trying to be all of those things. It just comes across as confident and genuine.

I listened to the new Randy Houser record a couple of weeks ago (it's quite good). I only WISH that I could sing THAT Country!! I'll take "confident and genuine" any day of the week!

Now, something you may want to consider. And to those who jump on me for this being not supportive, please realize he asked us to "have at it." This will just be an idea.

If I lyrically "mute" the male part for this verse something seems slightly out of character for me. The lines would read like this with the male omitted :

Quote:
she likes french wine and russian novels
she's pasta and rock and roll
she says "vive la difference"

She likes french wine...got it.
Russian novels...getting it even more
Pasta...good development
Rock and roll...she does? Maybe I don't know her.
"vive la difference"...ah, back to who I thought she was.

For me, it would be consistent with her character if you did something like "

she likes Itialian pasta and Russian novels (could leave "Italian" out, just thought it added a bit of description)
baseball's what i know
i'm bbq and country music
she's jazz with a glass (near rhyme) of merlot/Bordeaux (for the rhyme, and also both French wines which you alluded. Also taking into account the next line)
she says "vive la difference"
i say "what the hell"

Of course, you can come up with what to do much better than I could. Just throwing out some examples.

For all I know, you like the juxtaposition of rock and roll which does work in a different, grab your attention, kind of way.

Like I said, I really can't give much, or anything to improve on. I'm on the tee and whiffing the ball, so... I guess, I'll leave it at, another great one my friend. I used to say "I don't say this often, but this could be on the radio" but I'm starting to say it pretty often around here. I love the song. Really great job, as everyone else has said.

I readily see your point about using "jazz" instead of "rock'n'roll". I "fits" the perceived scenario (to the logical mind). However... this verse was written as a comparison/juxtaposition of my wife and I - and every part of it is "real life". She hates jazz. She loved 70's Rock - BTO was a favorite - though she could not names bands - she just knows the songs when they come on the radio (and returns to her wild-college-days).

I would argue that "french wine" goes with "russian novels" in a way that "italian pasta" does not (and as you implied, I doubt I would ever use "Italian" to modify "pasta).

Although I started with "french wine" and later used "vive la difference" it was not to make "her" seem THAT French - which adding the merlot (or Bordeaux) does (for me). Needless to say, the point was "we are completely different". (She does love french wine and she does use those phrases she learned in high school french class - to this day...)

All of this is, of course, subjective. But it was fun to "argue the point"! Thanks for the chance to do that!!

Ok, I didn't have that information. lol However, I totally understand. When I was reading the lyrics I had two thoughts about this specifically (aside from a possible suggestion)

1-I haven't known you to struggle with what you are trying to say. If it's there; it's meant to be there.

2-I very much wondered if it was your life experience. I have a friend, who is a married wife of two young boys. She very much enjoys the finer things in life. "Great" shoes, wine, and food. The last meal they prepared was seven courses; and I couldn't pronounce any of it. She is not stuffy. Just cultured. Oh...and she plays bass in a rock band! So, I promise I get it.

[quote]I would argue that "french wine" goes with "russian novels" in a way that "italian pasta" does not (and as you implied, I doubt I would ever use "Italian" to modify "pasta).

No argument there at all. I was throwing out an idea. I personally haven't known anyway to snuggle up by the fire with a great book, and a bowl of fettuccine Alfredo. It's too heavy. Everyone knows with Russian novels, you go with a red sauce.

Seriously though, I did get the imagery and felt it was very accurate. What I was trying to avoid was the double use of the word "soul." The second as a type of music.

I'm on board with what you have for sure. smile

At least she's using something from HS French class. I also took French but only remember how to say things sporadically. One phrase I do remember is "où est la corbeille?" It sounds beautiful when said; but has been fairly useless so far for me in life. lol

I'm laughing thinking; well...neither of us are not one for trends apparently. Aren't we supposed to be offended? You would think at least one of use could have pulled that off. wink

Thank you for sharing a bit more about where the song emerged from. I love hearing the story behind the story.

floyd,

Very nice tune! Energetic!
This song is truly the royal road of the American rock song.
It seems to be an wonderful example of an eight beat song.
The chord progression is also perfect for this song.
Strong vocal as usual.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.
