Good observations.
Speaking as one who spends a lot of his time in hymns from the 19th century, an important era for America, an equally important era in European Classical, symphonic, The Romantic.
Seems I'm forever hearing well known hymn melodies embedded in classical works. Just yesterday, the first line of, "Shall we gather at the river" was in a horn concerto, missed the composer, might have been Scarlotti.
But, of course, the hymnists were trained in the classics. What piano student has not played Greensleeves?
