Is it possible to use the Band in A Box VST within Realband?

Yes just make sure that you use the 32 bit version. I must ask why though? RB already does everything the plugin does and more.

Does Realband really do everything the BAIB plugin does? Have the features on the plugin been severely cut back in comparison to the full BAIB program?
I haven't used the plugin, but I was assuming the plugin would have the Melodist, and control over the soloist (Fill-ins, influence by melody, play around melody etc) which Realband doesn't seem to have.
Doesn't the plugin of Band in A Box have these features that the full program does? Or does Realband have them, and I've missed them?

I haven't used the plugin, but I was assuming the plugin would have the Melodist, and control over the soloist (Fill-ins, influence by melody, play around melody etc) which Realband doesn't seem to have.
Doesn't the plugin of Band in A Box have these features that the full program does? Or does Realband have them, and I've missed them? The plugin is a very light version of BIAB so I doubt it has any of the features you listed. It does have one feature BIAB does not and that is Multiriff generation. But RealBand already has that.

Ah, Thanks John. I didn't realize the plugin was stripped back in its features. In that case, there wouldn't be much point in opening it as a VST in Realband.

Exactly and having Real Band is one reason I have not been a big fan of all the time and effort that went into creating the VST in the first place. I can kinda see the point of it but RB is already sitting there ready to go. To me they should have focused on making RB an overall better DAW, not creating a brand new and very buggy VST. I asked the same question you did during testing, is this VST some sort of Biab Lite and the answer was yes, that's exactly what it is. I responded back that if the VST has Biab in it's name people are going to expect full functionality so again, why?

Bob, I understand what you are saying, but think you kind of miss the whole point of this plugin. If the VSTi has every feature of BiaB then it wouldn’t be a plugin. It would be a full program and we already have that. The whole concept was to have the basic generation features of Biab and RB to use inside an DAW.
There are literally thousand if not millions of users out there who will not ever use RB because they like the workflow in their DAW of choice, be it protools, BandLab, reaper, studio one, Cubase, you name it. The plugin allow thes people to create tracks to add into projects with ease that would be much harder any other way. If they need to use melodist, harmonists, and a plethora of other options then start in BiaB. If you need to generate a basic track, or add a mandolin or Celtic fiddle or what ever boom open the plugin and go to work.
I would like to see RB advance also but to get it to the level of say studio one would take some major recoding. Maybe someday. But one of the big asks was to have a plugin of Biab to add those basic features to high end DAWs. Now there is one. This has the potential to bring in many new users to PGM using the anti on future development.

I completely get the marketing side of this and agree that PG needs to find a way to bring new, younger folks into the fold. Once all of us classic rock/jazz/country/folk types leave the stage, who's going to buy Biab? Right now I'm guessing the average age of forum users is around 60. If a millennial were to drop in here I doubt they would stay long, this forum looks like it's for grandpa to mess around with ancient music to them.
Having said that I still think all the many long term requests and irritations of Biab should have addressed first, clean everything up, make it visually look like a modern DAW before doing all of this 64 bit and VST stuff. I was surprised to learn that they were able to compile Biab to 64 bit without having to rewrite the basic code. IMHO it should have been rewritten to address so many long term issues like the 255 bar limit, 4 chords per bar, correct usage of time sigs and so many other things that hold the program back. Then speaking of marketing, make the thing look like a modern DAW rather than a 30 year old DOS program.
I think that would have been a smarter move, then move on to the VST which after a complete rewrite probably could have rolled out as a much better plugin.

There is certainly some wisdom in your views. I have often thought that if they took a long hard look at RB and started a complete rewrite to make it more in line with Main stream DAWs it would be a great benefit to them. RB in basic functionality, setting aside the RD/RT generation feature is really not that much different from PT from 20 years ago. It could use a full overhaul.
Still I’m glad the plugin is here. Maybe next year it will get small updates and BiaB, and RB will get the attention they deserve.
64 bit is a cool update, now address some of the big issues.

However, based on the scope of the yearly updates and the issues with the plugin rollout, I doubt they have the team in place (size, experience, etc.) to accomplish this.

My advice would be to freeze RB as a legacy product and add multiriff support to BIAB. Then focus on updating BIAB in future versions and continue to develop the plugin in parallel. Maybe even take a bold step like licensing Reaper or another DAW to be delivered with BIAB if they feel they need to deliver a DAW.

I suppose the biggest requirement would be to do something about the number and length of tracks that are currently supported.
If they did undertake a change, they really need to also review and cater for the regularly requested items (fixes) that are identified in the Wish List.

Bob I mostly agree. I am very disappointed in the 64 bit BiaB. I am glad that I can use my 64 bit VSTis but I have the same 32 bit limitations that you have mentioned. I will respectfully disagree with the make BiaB like a modern DAW. I would like to see BiaB become a more functioning modern looking BiaB but I would like to see it stay BiaB and not a DAW. YMMV
