No I am not leaving the forum as the title may imply. Just my simple New Years Eve offering.

I had a lot of fun with this one, despite (or maybe because of) all the technical problems I encountered and overcame during production. This arrangement went back and forth between BIAB and RB several times working with adjusting key, tempo, real tracks, double-time, drag&drop, four bar ending. And then over into my new DAW, REAPER, for recording of the live tracks. This in only my second project in REAPER and I have to say it is fantastic. Of course, love that BIAB/RB also.

I'll Be Seeing You

This is a busy arrangement. As a result I know there are lots of areas which need more polish. The vocals were obviously the most challenging part. I must have sung them 50 times before I decided on the final take by me, myself and I.

Hi Dan,

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your rendition of "I'll be seeing you".

I must say, it's a very skillfully put together arrangement. I didn't hear it as "busy" at all. To me it was just right. I really liked the way you panned the interchange in solos between piano and trumpet. The idea of a musical duel springs to mind Nice. Great guitar extemporisation, too. The song is very well mixed. The only comment I'd make, and please keep in mind that this is entirely "personal preference", is that I'd have liked a single voice singing rather than a doubled voice. Somehow, to me, a single voice with the barest hint of reverb better reflects the intimate nature of the lyrics. As I said, though, that's just me Overall, you've won me with your work!

I’m in Noel’s camp. Everything is top notch except, IMHO, the vocal doubling.

Great guitar chops BTW.

FWIW-one way to get a doubled vocal effect is to use a subtle chorus effect. Not as much as a guitarist would use but just enough to add some depth to the vocal.

I agree with the above the doubling makes it sound pitchy.

Thank you all for the listen and comments. You are all very kind .

The vocals were indeed difficult for me. My voice just does not have that clear clean quality of tone which to my ear is needed to sound good. I also suffer from a limited range. Hard for me to cover a full octive. You know, you can tell a "good" singer from the first note. Now of course there are those exceptions to the rule....

I actually took a vocal lesson once (yea, only once due to the $100/hr), but it was very helpful in letting me know what my problem is. Its all physical doing with the vocal chords. Mine apparently are thick which results in a wispy sound due to air escaping past them (.. or something like that).

Bottom line, I just could not get comfortable with the single voice recording. I sang it over 50 times over the course of days until each day I could sing no more. Tried every trick I could from solar plexis breathing to holding my face and lifting up under my jaw to stretch the vocal chords while I sang(don't laugh this trick actually helped). I tried vocal effects (reverb...) , but felt these were just too obviously masking a poor voice. When it was all done I felt that sending three tracks to the mix overcame the "wispy" sound.

So I admit it don't have that Billi Holiday vibe, nor the cool tones of Michael Buble, that really do this song justice, but for now I am comfortable with the Jazzmandan vocal sound

I hear where you are coming from! You're not alone. One of the things that I learned to do was to use non-destructive editing and to cut, paste and blend. I used to aim to get a track right in a single take. I don't do that any more. I simply record 4 vocal tracks (sometimes 6) - one after the other on separate tracks. I now use those 4 tracks to compile a 5th track that is a cutting and pasting of the best sounding phrases from each performance. It's worth the effort. In my last posting, MarioD said "Outstanding vox" to me... little does he know!

Dan it sounded great to me. I'd also dump the double vocal. I'd duplicate the vocal twice. Split one to far left and one to far right. The 3rd leave dead center. Move the control of all 3 thracks to sub-group2. In sub-group2 select a compressor of your choice. Add the 10 band EQ. In the EQ drop the 1st 2 on the left to the 0. Move the 3rd down about 50%. Leave the rest alone.

Add a reverb of your choice. Set it to a touch, say, 10 -15 % mix.

Now mix them well until you're satisfied with the quality of the vocal track.

That will do the trick.

One last thing. I picked up on a lot of puffing when any letter sound was a P, B or sometimes a T. Means you're too close to the mic. Keep it about 6 inches away from your mouth or put a windsock on the mic to cut down puffing.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Dan, musically it is a great track and you have done it justice. I don't find it too busy.

Vocally, I think you need help. First, sit / stand UP and open up those vocal chords! I get the feeling you are restricting yourself somehow. Singing while watching what you are playing on the fretboard? I know. I do it myself sometimes. Cut the doubling and get a pop guard. Also, is it actually in the right key for your voice? I feel the key is too low for you.

You're almost there though!

OMG! Sam. I am so glad that you and some of the other "vocalists" are weighing in on this. You are so right, "...I need help".

1) Regarding the pop guard, I am going out first thing tomorrow to pick one up. I definitly heard what you and Russ did with the popping.

2) Restricting my vocal chords? The guitar and vocal tracks are laid down seperately so no restrictions there. I have tried it all, standing, sitting, low volume -whispering, high volume, head voice, diaphram breathing, different mics, even that face holding thing. I do get different sounds based on almost all of these, I just have to find the "sweet spot".

3) Key to low? Now this is very insightful of you. I started the song initially in Eb. My voice does ring nicer in this higher key, however, there was one note which I could not hit, (high Eb, - @ .. and when the night is ...NEW!). So I lowered the song to C. That note dropped to a C (not surprisingly) and I thought all was good. But I agree now that the lower key did effect the rest of the song. I may try Key of D or just work on hitting that high note.

I am going to work this up again with all the great suggestions you all have been providing. Thanks again.

1: Do it. You will be surprised and pleased at the investment
2: Then just SING it? Don't try to replicate somebody else. Make the song your own. Sing it the way YOU want to. Stop trying to be technical and open up your heart AND your voice. You have a good one. Own it! THAT is your 'sweet spot'
3: Too much of a drop. D is probably right. Don't be scared of those 'high notes'. If it is YOUR version, an alternative note from the chord is still OK, even if you drop down an octave (i.e. in tune but you can't hit it up there so you hit it lower down). Believe me, it works
