my fun actually is doing vocs in lots of different voc
styles. not just cockney.
ive done everything from straight church choirs thru,..
mor,blues,croon,heavy metal etc etc plus gilbert n sullivan...
ie whatever the song calls for.
sometimes the vocs work other times not.
you should hear me doing white xmas lol.
havent done that croon for ages. dunno if i can do it now.
it was lots easier 10 yrs ago and before frankly cos age is
starting to hit me bad. so now have to work harder at it.
in summary any voc is just loads of fun irrespective of genre.
in my own music collection i got everything from old jazz thru
gershwin thru classic rok thru van halen n zz n the ventures n shadows etc etc.
i just love all kinds of music.
heres a good joke at my expense you might get a fun giggle out of mate.
years back i was in a rock band. plus a normal church choir.
by day i was a puter engr in button down suits.
by night doin the rok gig...it was leather gear rather than suits.lol.
nobody at work new bout my "other life".
well heres the joke of it all mate on me.
on a rok gig i look out in the audience and there are
2 women from work !!
the look on their faces was hilarious.
total shock n amazement. priceless.
cos all they had seen was the puter engineer side at work.
but the jig was up.
they came up to me after n said "your a real jekyll n hyde"..lol.
next day it got around at work. but all good fun razzing etc.
i felt like hiding in the loo.
moral...dont do gigs in the same town as you work the button down day gig..lol.
in summary my belief is you only come this way once.
so might as well have as max fun as you can.
frankly i'll be blasting me amp out n singin in the old folks home at 95
if i last that long..lol.

Beautiful. I can't compete with that (mate!). And thanks for your wishes re 2010, re which someone somewhere (was it todays paper?) has said, "good bye noughties, but don't we have to wait until 2011 for the tens to start? (Their thinking is that just as the year 2000 had to end before we could say we had completed the millenium and were starting the next thousand years, so we wouldn't complete the 1st decade of the new century/millenium until the end of 2010. Sounds fair to me.) But your band story resonates with me because here in 2010 and despite my advanced age (53) I'm actually just starting out on some semi pro playing work with a little weddings/functions band, after some 25 years of playing in church bands and music. Not giving up playing in church at all, but spreading my wings as it were. (See www.vinyltonic.com.au I'm the dorky looking dude on bass in the trilby hat. All the better to hide my balding head!) And re your belief. You're right about coming this way only once. But as I'm sure your church time has underlined, this is only the apprenticeship for the real deal anyhow. Hence Paul's exhortation to become "good workmen, rightly dividing the word of truth"... Now manning, while I've got your attention, try this for a hairy PC problem. My rig is an AMD 3500 CPU on a 5 year old Gigabyte GA - KN -9F mobo. 2 250 gig HDD's one for PTPA one for OS and everything else. I run XP pro SP3. CPU clock speed ~2.2Ghz. Sound card is a Delta 1010LT. Graphics (big deal, I know but FWIW) a nVidia 220GT Igig, new card, all good with that so far. Most of the configuration/gear here I chose on the basis of PTPA forum recommendations and am well pleased with the results. Issue is that I cannot get the mobo to accept more than 1.5 G of RAM despite that I am adding one of the specified brands (Hynix), and that the mobo's spec'd to accept up to 4G. When I plug more in I get a beep alarm from the mobo and she won't fire up. Just spent $110 today on 2 1G sticks of Hynix RAM and the PC won't look at it. Beeeeeep. Beeeeeep. Beeeeeep. Beeeeeep. Hmmmmmm. Given that I am doing everything in conformance with Gigabyte's specs, I am wondering if there is something in the BIOS that needs to be reset, RAM size restriction or setting perhaps, and how to get into it and adjust? Await your thoughts and advice with interest. Others also very welcome to comment. Can't be too obscure a problem. Cheers then. Off to sample a frothy Coopers, maybe a West End. John

Shackman your an aussie ?? great country mate. 1. cool looking pic n trilby hats. hmm..given me an idea mate. think i'll write a song bout a band called the trilbys that rok out heavy. 2. re church choirs, the choirmaster didnt approve of my rok gig..lol. i loved church choirs...nothing quite like a massed church choir going full bore. or a massed church choir going full bore with a classical orchestra and a rock band. 3. re the puter. those "beeps" mate are very important. they are a diagnostic tool. what you should do is look up the motherboard giga manual.. (hopefully you can find it.) and it will tell you what the beeps mean. what form do the beeps take ?? its difficult to say without being there looking at your system. i gotta be honest mate, if were me (i put this in my tips in tips section..) your prolly gonna be forced into a new system cos of the way music software is headed. and the power needed. when i went from a single processor like yours n upgraded my resource load shot down from 70 pc to 20 pc. for a few hundred buks consider a new amd 620 quad processor system . eg ...heres the amd cheapo quad core processor. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819103706 if you get a new system load up on ram..its cheap. and importantly 2 7200 rpm drives with 32 mb cache. such drives here will do loads of traks n cost 70 buks each. but if ya got the buks..i7 system all the way. but they are still pricey. all the best mate. ps..i tried googling for your giga manual..no luck. i would contact giga for it mate.

G'day Shackman,
RE the RAM problem. I couldn't locate the motherboard model on the Gigabyte site - are you sure of the numbers?
It sounds like you have incompatible memory. It isn't so much a brand issue as it is a TYPE issue, and possibly a speed issue. If you check the existing memory you should (hopefully) find some markings like PC-100 or PC-2100 or perhaps DDR400 (DDR400 = PC3200) or some such - you need to match this figure - NB this is not an amount of RAM but a specification.
PC133 was the fastest SDRAM spec, faster RAM EG PC1600 and above is DDR SDRAM - the two specs are not truly compatible. If your new RAM is DDR and the board only uses SDRAM then you will get errors. Or, if the new RAM is SDRAM and you should have DDR then you will likely also have problems.
All that said, Manning is correct. If you want to upgrade, 5 years is a good age to do a new machine. However, if money is an object, then RAM is still comparatively cheap, you just need the right RAM.
If you can confirm the model of the MB I can check what you need if you like, though from the CPU I would guess DDR400 / PC3200

Try this - Remove all existing RAM
Insert only the two new sticks of RAM, as they match
Try to turn on machin see if it registers the RAM
NOTE- remember where the existing sticks were before removing; it may matter on some boards..
and put the replacements in those slots..

Bob, Lawrie and Manning,
Thanks, lads (or should I say "mates") for your various words of assistance. The issue is partially solved, thanks to you.
To take your posts in order:
1. Manning. The beeps are according to the Gigabyte manual for the GA-K8NF-9 mobo indicate a DRAM error. I see above I got the model no. wrong. Whoopsie, sorry about that. Well spotted, Lawrie.
Manning my man, I would love a new rocket ship PC such as you've pointed out in your post but can't really go the $400-500 just now for a new mobo and CPU + 4G plus of RAM. I don't do a lot of gaming (although sometimes wind down with a spot of MS Flight Simulator) and use the PC mostly for web and PTPA needs. 2.2Ghz plus the current specs as above is probably enough for that, so the old girl is going to have to hang in bit longer. I just indulged in a snappy little camcorder (Sanyo Xacti HD2000) which set me back about what a thorough engine and ancillaries swap for the PC would cost, so thats my Christmas and NY budget blown. The camcorder shoots in various resoloutions and I find my PC struggling with the CPU redlining at 100% to play full HD at 30fps, but hey, the end product is going to end up as a DVD anyhow (it's an oral retrospective by my beloved Dad of his life, we're going to capture it before he drops off the perch), so better to just shoot at DVD res and don't flog the CPU into the ground.
2. Lawrie, nice pick up re the mobo designation. Yours truly showed up as just too lazy to drag his miserable carcass from the study into the kitchen last night and pick up the manual off the table to ensure I specified it correctly. The existing memory was (and I quote from the sticks themselves) 1gig of Hynix PC 3200DDR, + 512mb of Kingston KVR 400X64c3AK2/1G. That Kingston looks by the suffix to be 1 gig, don't it, but seems to add 512mb only. Go figure. Your comment about incompatible RAM was spot on though. The new Hynix RAM (2* 1G sticks) would not work along side the existing RAM in any configuration within the 4 available RAM slots. I'm sure I tried all the mathematically possible combinations.
3. Bob, you get the best suggestion prize. I took your advice and removed all the existing RAM and replaced it with the new Hynix 1G + IG sticks. Bingo, it's a happening thing. Kind of expensive way to add just 512mb of RAM for a new total of 2G but I'm sure we've all had expensive lessons in the computer domain before. At least I've got a smidge of improvement.

1. re your pc.
glad you got it sorted mate.
if you have no buks...another idea is to keep your eyes skinned
for a giveaway amd dual core system.
your gonna see more of em as folks n industry upgrade to quads initially
and then 8 cores. once they come out cheap.
for example you might get a "gimme" or under 100 buks dual core amd.
just slap a brand new 7200 rpm drive in with a big fat cache for 70 buks.
another alternative if your running a slow drive in that
amd single core of yours is to
find a friendly local pc tech and ask him to install a brand new drive
and see how much that helps things. try a 32 mb cache 7200 rpm.
2. re your dad.
fully understood. my heart goes out to you .
i'll share something with you n the other mates here.
i cried my guts out when i lost mine.
he was a huge comic, a brilliant engineer and my mum in uk still
religiously polishes his snare drum many years later.
he was also a fine jazz drummer. and was fond of saying..
"blinkin young drummers today dont know how to use brushes"..lol.
when i lost him in order to cope i decided to write a song in his honor.
viz the whole of london town is crying song on my mota site.
when i did the lead vocs for that i broke down in tears many times.
and if you listen closely you can prolly hear it.
its all about the cycle of life.
just a rough song cos i had no budget.
so look after your dad mate. and get tons of footage.
luckily we have lots of old black n white film footage of my dad.
includeing the queens visit to africa where my dad was working as an engineer
many moons ago. so i transferred the old film to dvd so my mum
now 91 and still as strong as an ox..amazeing woman..could watch it.

Mate, appreciate your thoughtful responses.
1. Roger wilco re an affordable AMD dual or quad core set up at some stage. Thing is, tho, my set up is an old socket config- socket 939. For which there are no newish rocket ship CPU's. It would seem the only true alternative is a heart transplant ie. a mobo/CPU/RAM combo into my existing case and exisiting cards/PSU/HDD's etc.( If $ were no issue, I'd go for it, but I'm having to be a bit judicious with discretionary outlays currently, as the said beloved Dad advanced me twenty large at no interest last April to soften the burden of a divorce settlement, and I want to maintain the momemtum of repaying him back.)
2. Speaking of Dads and the video project. I got this idea into my head a few years back about capturing some footage of Mum and Dad talking about their lives, family and social history, and life lessons learnt. The thought was to use modern tech means get an affordable permanent record of them as a person, for present and future generations of the family. Particularly the little nippers and juvies. My only Grandpa died when I was 8 and I feel the loss of never really knowing him to this day. I started with my 85 y.o. Mum about 3 years ago. Unfortunately, just a month after the 40 min. pilot session with a borrowed little digicam, which was only ever intended to get lighting and sound levels right and personally get a rough idea of how to interview and steer the discussion, she passed away, basically of old age plus a nasty blood clot. So this oral history thing has been on my mind for a while but has taken a bit of time to get my own camera and get into it.
As a point of interest, it's been suprising how different video players impose differing loads on the CPU, at least here on mine. Worst of all is Apple Quicktime, WMP (11 here) is better, but an open source player called VLC is best of all. For a given clip which makes Quicktime load the CPU to 100% and produces a stuttering
replay, WMP 11 loads the CPU to about 90%, and VLC loads to ~60%. Interesting, and I wonder if there are implications for sound reproduction of, say , mp3's thru QT or WMP. Any thoughts?

Shackman re audio n video. frankly mate i'm not au courant with all the pc offerings on the video side. are you wanting to do video editing too ?? you might want to check out magix,com if i remember they have some inexpensive video manipulation software. also i dont know how far this has come ddclip.. http://www.softlab-nsk.com/ddclipro/index.htmldont hold me to it but i think you can mix audio n video. n do video editing ?? yes i feel your pain mate and the need to document. ive lost over 50 good elderly in my family in the last 10 yrs now. ps..re your single core amd. yes it would need a big upgrade ..ptolly not worth it. what i do wit old systems is , when i get a new pc.. the old one is used for the net or i strip the drives out of em and put the drives in a cheapo enclosure n use the drives for added back up.
