Well, I stumped the tech working the Chat line here at PGM. He even had me reinstall everything. Didn't make a difference.
I'm preparing an email to the tech support folks at PGM, but I thought I'd go ahead and mention the problem here because -- well, the more heads, the better, I reckon.
So, here's the deal, near as I've been able to see things. I first noticed the problem when I tried assigning Sforzando to an instrument in a song that I was working on. I've done this same thing many times before, only this time, after setting up Sforzando, I was greeted with the same old cheezy MIDI instrument. So, next I tried another synth -- this time Cakewalk's TTS-1, but still nothing. So then I started going down a list of VSTis I have and not one of them worked. It was at that point where I booted the chat function, and as a result of the chat, downloaded and reinstalled bb. After the reinstall, still no joy with Sforzando or any of the other VSTis I tried. It was at this point that the tech I was chatting with recommended I send an email to the support folks. So that's what I'm gonna do next. But I thought I'd go ahead and mention it here on the off-chance that one of you bright folks might have an answer.
Anyway, got any ideas?

One, for the moment, test by installing an earlier build. I’ve never done it but I recall someone saying you can. Report back.
Two, did Windows 10 just update on that machine?
Three, bad luck, it will be Canada Day July 1 with reduced support.

Does the problem happen if you restore factory defaults? To do this, close Band-in-a-Box, create a copy of your bb\Preferences folder, name it Preferences_backup. Then delete all the files in bb\Preferences and run Band-in-a-Box again.

Have you tried with a different song project? I'm wondering if the song project file is corrupted.

Okay, I'll take your questions and comments in the order y'all posted.
Matt: 1) The tech recommended that I reinstall BiaB, so I downloaded the Full install package and reinstalled everything. I asked him if the package included the latest patch and he said he thought it did. Turns out it didn't. I tried it out before I installed patch 628 and then after installing 628 and it didn't make a difference,
2) I'm still running Win7 and it did update recently -- like maybe a week or two ago?
3) No matter, I can put up with the inconvenience for now. If I decide that I really need to get serious, I can always export the BiaB MIDI files to Cakewalk and use the VSTs there.
Andrew: I haven't tried restoring to factory defaults -- unless reinstalling the program does. Nonetheless, I'll follow your recommendation and see if a reset to defaults does any good.
Jim: Yes, I tried getting things to work with several different song files before contacting PGM.

When you say "greeted by the same old cheesy instrument", where is that sound coming from. ?I gather from your post that no matter which synth you select, you hear the exact same instrument sound? What is your default synth set to? How are you choosing a different synth on particular tracks? BIAB has no built in sounds, so any MIDI output has to be going through some synth. Are you loading the synths for MIDI tracks in slot one (in the mixer)? Just a few things to think about. I'll play with mine tonight (I also have Win7 on my laptop) and see what I get, but it should work correctly. When you bring up the synth interfaces, do you see the data being processed in the interface (most light up to indicate the presence of MIDI data)?

I just have BiaB defaulted to using Coyote, which is just the default Microsoft wavetable synth, from what I understand. So when I select a midi instrument, or choose to change one, these are the sounds I get. When I select the plugins tab and then select the VST/DX Synths popup, if I select Coyote as the synth, it changes nothing. Still the same sounds.
If I select another synth from the popup, like TTS-1, nothing happens. TTS-1 is dead and unresponsive and the same old voices continue to play. Doesn't matter which synth I select, this happens with all of them.
BiaB's getting weirder and weirder, so I'm trying Andrew's suggestion and deleted the preferences folder. But now my system's lost all audio -- this happens at times -- and the only way I know how to fix this is to reboot the system. So that's what I'm gonna do. But it's bed time for me, so I'll just be shutting things down for the evening. I'll give it another shot tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads-up, Mike.
Well, it looks like Andrew's fix worked. I've got BiaB reliably playing TTS-1 right now. Which means Sforzando should also work if I feel the need. I'm glad this did the trick because I haven't received a response from PG Support yet.
