There's a setting that I use that always keeps the tracks named bass piano drums guitar strings. These are the original names that PG Music used for these tracks. It's only in recent times that tracks change names to reflect the instruments on them.
If you want to try this setting, there are two option boxes that are found when one first enters "Options | Preferences". These are shown on the image below. When they are deactivated, BIAB reverts to its original static naming mode.
I always leave these boxes deactivated because it's easy to see what instrument is on the track. It also helps me remember how to type exclusions -- just as you have mentioned.
Also, any instrument put on the Melody or Soloist track cannot be excluded -- shots, holds, rests, always apply on these two tracks.
