Very thought provoking post. I can tell you two pieces that changed MY world: Elvis' JAILHOUSE ROCK (1957) and The Beatles' HERE, THERE, and EVERYWHERE (1966). Classical composers whose work had a profound impact on me when first heard include Scott Joplin (Fig Leag Rag), Stravinsky (Petrouchka), Satie (Gymnopedie #1) and Chopin (Nocturne, op.9, #2).
