Thanks for the kind words. You are too nice.

Not on this site. You can count on getting an honest response here.

>>>...I write lyrics and sing the melody then spends days trying to figure out the chord changes...>>

Some of your chords are predictable. That makes the song comfortable and easy to listen to. Some other chords are unexpected. That makes your sound distinctive and has the listener want to hear the song again. A balance is what is needed and i think you got the balance just right.

>>>... It used to take me months, so at least I am improving. I think this software will help that as well...>>>

Go to BIAB >>Window >> Chord Substitution ... and also >> Auto Generate Chord...
You wont have to fool around for long to figure out what BiaB is doing with these tools. You can learn a lot about chrd changes from this tool.

Ditto to all other comments so far. You got something worth developing.

Ricky,

1st of all very nice nice song writing and as many have already said, for your first production this is a wonderful effort. In particular the advise Russ gave you on the vocal is dead on. I can't wait to hear more from you.

Hi Ricky,
This is a good first effort.

"I am pursuing being a country artist"

Russ gave you some really good advice. I like your voice alot. You have a good quality country voice however so do 99% of the male wannabe population of Nashville and you'll find that out when you go there. If you are truly serious about this you need to work on polishing up your vocals just a little bit. Start with breathing exercises - easy one - stand up, breath in through nose during count 1,2,3,4 Feel that diaphragm expand Hold in 1,2,3,4 Breath out mouth 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. Repeat ten times. Do this before you sing and you'll be surprised at how something this simple will impact your vocals. You can even do it sitting driving in the car. When you don't have enough air vocals become breathy - breathing - air equals control.

When you are listening to your favorite styles of country tunes notice how they are sung. A song, particularly a ballad, almost always has some sustained notes.

Also notice how the songs are mixed - what instrument comes in first where are they in the stereo field.

I hope this helps you. I would love to see you realize your dream.

Josie

Talent alert here guys.

A poetic, touching and sincere song with well chosen and sympathetic instrumentation.

If I had to give a few corrective pointers they would be:
- in the vox, don’t be in such a hurry to end the phrase
- not sure about that major 9th chord in the string section @ 0:35., 1.40 etc. Perhaps a simple major would ring clearer?
- I also feel the chorus section is a little over-complex. I expect it to resolve sooner. The “tried and tested” technique is to use those build-up passages (in this case ‘Her love showed me the way/like a beacon in the night’) as a lead in to the chorus, rather than as part of it.

But these are really minor suggestions as the piece is very strong as it is.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and kindness. I have started retweaking and will repost when it is finished.

I have started paying attention to the production of the songs on the radio and it has helped my thought process. I never paid attention to any of that before. I've always focused on the lyrics and the emotion the song evoked. Thanks to everyone for opening my eyes to such things.

Thanks again to all. You have been a great help and encouragement. :-)
