I wish there was a new paradigm favorable to song-writers/composers that required streaming services and other publishers of other people's content to adapt or go away. Why should I really care about the fiscal health of You-Tube if they can't compete in an arena that pays content creators? What is suddenly sacred about their business model?

I wish there was a more radical wing of ASCAP, BMI and ilk that used protest, media/social media, and the threat of modern strike to educate, agitate, and gum up the works. I'd be interested, even though I've made very little money from song-writing. I won't do it naked, but maybe somebody can.

Performing and recording artists can "Mach schau, mach schau!" all they need/want to in any way that suits them and their consumers. I will either go/buy/contribute or I won't. But I "owe" the people who wrote the songs I listen to and I'd like to know for sure that someone in the food-chain is paying them--artist, label, venue, streaming service, whatever--and paying them commensurate to their contribution to the content. Let them figure out how to make a living doing that. Even if it falls directly to the consumer, then so-be-it. I will either stream/support/contribute or I won't. But I won't get it if I don't.

This was officially my 666th post. Hmmmmm.

Those eyebrows.... what mountain range was that anyway?

Yeah... I didn't listen to the video but i did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express once so I'm totally qualified to comment on this.

Times change.... I used to live in a town (military town with a large base) where there were at any given time, at least 12 or so full time bands playing and making a living. It wasn't uncommon for a decent band to play 20 or more nights in a month and hardly ever need to leave that town to do it. That was then..... this is now. There are very few bands there at all. The military base stopped using live music and the civilian clubs also changed how they operate. DUI/DWI laws changed and things changed drastically. Club managers found other ways to spend their money that resulted in a greater return on the dollars spent.

If you can't make the club money....and a huge heap of it at that....every time you play, they will find someone else or something else that will.

Our band was known for it's first class stage presence and showmanship...weird as it was, the people loved it and would come from great distances to see us. But all good things must end and so it did.....

I think she has done quite a few of these. I am busy with her book "The art of asking" so I will let you know when I come to that part. In the TED talk there is a photo of her standing amongst the crowd ...

Amanda Palmer is readily known for her shock-value protesting. She does have some really fascinating things to say, and while I don't always agree with everything, I do love thinking about some of the philosophical questions she poses. And it doesn't hurt any that she's married to Neil Gaiman--and by that I mean the two of them when they work on things together, especially social issues--and the two of them become quite inspiring power houses. Their partnership is certainly a fascinating one. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on her book later once you're finished!
