There are a couple of things that I didn't know about so thanx for sharing this Bob.

Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

I think most of us look at a PC as a basic tool, I know I have for years. Starting at work I have a job to do, here's the software to do it, here's how it works. That also involves knowing some basic Windows functions like CtlV/C for copy/paste. Same thing at home. Maybe we read news, maybe we send emails and other things. I've never spent the time to dig into how Windows actually works and all the little things it can do. Now that I use my home PC for many different things I read a list like this and think, oh, that's cool, oh, I can use that.

It's a little humbling because I think I understand PC's but realize the young geeks are waaay ahead of me. And no, it's not just gaming and useless crap although some of it is that.

Oh, man - I hate stuff like this:

There are other great Windows 10 features that go unnoticed, too. For example, Power Throttling automatically limits the CPU available to background processes—even typical Windows desktop programs—saving you battery life. This is the kind of feature that just works in the background, making your PC experience better.

Automatically?

Many audio programs instruct us to Adjust for Best Performance of Background Services. That's what my Windows PC was set for. I just checked, and Windows has reset it to Programs.

They really should stop doing that.

I know but it's not about us, it's about the 95% of users who don't do music production. I don't have to tell you virtually NOBODY outside of our little world has a clue about that. Early this year I wrote about me building a brand new machine and after me taking and returning three yes, THREE bad mobo's in a row I let Fry's assemble it and their guy got another bad one right off their shelf and I was forced to pay an extra $20 for the same brand with a couple little things I didn't need because the last bad one was their last one in stock. I could have waited another week but twenty bucks, get it done.

I talked to several of the geeks there about what I do and none had a clue which was why I already had my list of components ready but it would be nice to talk to someone at a store like that who does music production. I'm sure there are some but we are talking 5% according to things I've read.

Many people rely on Sweetwater to get their audio computers but Sweetwater is not the only game in town.

The Cakewalk forum has a member named Jim Roseberry that works for an Ohio company that builds audio computers. He advises many Cakewalk users regarding home computer builds. Here is a link to +++ Purrfect Audio +++ My understanding is you receive lifetime technical support.

I've had conversations with Jim Roseberry on the Cakewalk forums. He's fantastic. Super knowledgeable.

That's me.

Plus I'm self-taught (google university and a few books). When I took electronics in college, they had the data option and the communications option. The guidance counselor advised me to take the communications option as there were few jobs in computing. At that time the computer was housed in a huge, refrigerated building with dumb terminals spread out over the campus.

The kids today grow up with these things and know more about them that I probably ever will.

Still, I know how to stay safe, write HTML code, make BiaB styles, record MIDI and audio, plus dozens of other apps, but when it comes time to raise the hood, I only have basic understanding of it. I know about power supplies, vacuum tubes, transistors, resistors, capacitors, ohms law, and all those things AC and DC theory taught me, but when it comes to the data part, my knowledge is limited, sometimes just enough to be dangerous to myself.

Bob [Notes], I taught this stuff in college, and I still get caught. Plus, no one can know all of it. You do just fine. And thank you for your major contribution to BIAB in the form of your custom styles!

I agree with you on that one Matt. I have a list of tweaks I go through every time there's a big Windows update/upgrade. It's amazing the number of things they revert back to the way "they" want by default. Services, menu items, programs like One Drive, they turn it all back on.

Somebody mentioned Windows 10 has embedded advertisements. Is that true? If so is it true of the home, educational, OEM and pro editions or just certain ones?

On this latest update, they removed sleep.exe from my C:\Windows directory. It's just a simple DOS command that's used like a timer. I use it for .BAT jobs that turn off my internet. Sleep 30 for example means to pause 30 seconds before resuming code.
